D'après Rahir, les tomes I, II et V sortent des presses des Elzevier de Leyde, les autres paraissent avoir été imprimées par Philippe de Croy (de Leyde). Publié à Paris sous le nom de son frère par Madeleine de Scudéry entre 1649 et 1653, Le Grand Cyrus obtint un succès prodigieux et remporta tous les suffrages des hommes et femmes de lettres de son temps, excepté de Boileau qui se moqua de ses extravagances et en parodia le prologue dans son Dialogue des Héros de Roman. Ce roman fleuve, conçu comme un feuilleton, dans la veine du roman pastoral ouverte par Honoré d'Urfé avec l'Astrée, Le Grand Cyrys tire son argument de l'histoire de l'ancienne Perse. Mais en réalité, le prétexte historique et exotique sert plutôt Mlle de Scudéry, l'une des plus illustres précieuses de son temps, à mettre en scène des personnages de la cour ou de son entourage en les affublant de noms empruntés à l'antiquité persane? Ce long roman doit donc se lire comme un roman à clef dont les personnages principaux sont en réalité le Grand Condé (Cyrus), la duchesse de Longueville (Madame), Julie d'Azngennes (Phélonide) ou encore Mlle de Scudéry elle-même (Sapho). Tout ce qui comptait alors en France, éait présent sous une forme ou une autre dans Le Grand Cyrus, qui par ailleurs, décrivait avec une certaine exactitude, sous le couvert de l'allégorie des scènes de batailles bien réelles de cette époque. C'est ce qui explique en partie le succès collosal de cette oeuvre qui fit de Mlle de Scudéry le chef de file de cette école du roman fleuve, initiée par d'Urfé, poursuivie par Gomberville (Poléxandre, 1632), et La Calprenède (Cassandre, 1642, Cléopâtre, 1648) et qui atteint sont apogée avec elle (Le Grand Cyrus, 1649, puis Clélie, 1654). Cette édition est illustrée de 10 frontispices de I. Van Meurs. L'exemplaire d'Hector De Backer (autrefois à la comtesse de Verrue) était truffé des illustrations de Chauveau destinées aux éditions parisiennes. Tchemerzine les a inclues par erreur dabs sa collation de l'édition elzévirienne. Exemplaire relié aux armes du marquis de La Mure. Elle est demeurée inconnue de l'ensemble des bibliographes : Deschamps, mentionne une seule édition mêlant les dates de 1653 et 1654. Tchemerzine décrit une première édition dont les volumes s'étagent de 1650 à 1656 avec les tomes 1 à 5 portant « seconde édition ». Il décrit 3 éditions ultérieures « mais elles contiennent des tomes de plusieurs dates différentes ». Ce chef-d'uvre de l'illustre précieuse Madeleine de Scudery (1608-1701) connut une vogue extraordinaire pendant toute la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle et fut traduit alors en anglais, allemand, italien, espagnol et même arabe. Il dut sa fortune à son caractère romanesque et sentimental et aux identifications de ses héros avec les personnages considérables de ce temps. Mlle de Scudéry était une des plus illustres « précieuses » ; ses samedis étaient célèbres où elle recevait tous les beaux esprits de la Cour et de la ville. Elle entreprit, avec son frère Georges, une série de romans dont les sujets sont tirés de l'histoire, celle de la Rome des rois pour Clélie, où se trouve la fameuse « Carte du Tendre », celle de la Perse antique pour Le Grand Cyrus. Lorsqu'il fut publié, ce recueil des fameuses conversations devint une manière de manuel de la bonne société. Ce qui est proprement féminin dans ce livre, c'est la peinture de l'amour précieux. Le Cyrus fut pour toute une génération le manuel du parfait amour. Tout l'hôtel de Rambouillet se reconnaissait dans le Cyrus. La renommée de mademoiselle de Scudéry ne demeura pas renfermée dans son pays ; la reine Christine l'honora de son amitié, de ses lettres et de ses dons ; l'académie des Ricovrati de Padoue l'admit dans ses rangs.
