Two ink stamps of a Vienna hospital on the title page, in the upper blank margin of pp. 1 and 39, and on the recto of each plate (one of the plates has two ink stamps). In all cases, the ink stamp… is in a blank space not touching any image or any word. On the front blank leaf the name of the work and Rokitansky's name have been written in (partially-erased) red pencil (with what appears to be a date of III/34 or maybe III/39). On the same leaf, the number 1003 has been written in blue pencil. First Edition. INSCRIBED, PRESENTATION COPY FROM ROKITANSKY TO LEVINSKY. Garrison-Morton 2904: "One of Rokitansky's best works". In this classic of cardiology, Rokitansky "described atheroma and calcification in the intima of arteries" (Willius & Dry, History of the Heart and the Circulation, p. 177). Rokitansky's "greatest monograph was [Die Defecte der Scheidewände des Herzens] The Defects in the Septum of the Heart, which appeared separately in 1875. . . . It served to complete a study of 1851 [Ueber einige der wichtigsten Krankheiten der Arterien] On Some of the Most Important Diseases of the Arteries [offered here]. Congenital malformations occupy a good deal of space in each. . . . Rokitansky was a good embryologist and able to predict in advance such failures of development as might be expected through embryological mischance in one part or another. . . . Acquired lesions were, however, not neglected; his atlas of diseases of arteries figures even such rarities as the now more frequently recognized periarteritis nodosa" (Long, History of Pathology, 2d ed., p. 110). Rokitansky "is credited with the initial case report of polyarteritis nodosa in 1852. He described the presence of aneurysmal lesions with nodes in multiple arteries observed at autopsy. . . . Rokitansky provides a compelling gross pathological description [see plate VI]. . ." (Matteson, Inflammatory Diseases of Blood Vessels, p. 211). Not in Bedford. Signed by Author(s).

Unten rechts mit "Oesterreicher f. 1831 M." signiert und datiert. - Die großformatige Darstellung zeigt detailreich und teilkoloriert die Arterien des Unte…rarms und der Hand. Die Abbildung stammt aus ?Dr. H. Oesterreicher's anatomischer Atlas oder bildliche Darstellung des menschlichen Körpers?, München, Verlag von J. Palm's Hofbuchhandlung, 1845. Johann Heinrich Oesterreicher (1805-1843) war Anatom und Professor an der Chirurgischen Schule in Landshut, er veröffentlichte 1830 ?Anatomische Steinstiche oder Darstellung des menschlichen Körpers sowie seiner Theile mit Benützung des besten bisher Geleisteten; gezeichnet in Stein gestochen und in sechs Abtheilungen gesammelt? Die 151 Steinstiche des umfangreichen und großformatigen Atlas fertigte er eigenhändig an. Das Werk wurde nach seinem Tod durch Michael Pius Erdl (1815-1848), Anatom an der Münchner Universität, überarbeitet und um weitere Bildtafeln ergänzt. Das Atlas gliedert sich in Knochen-, Bänder-, Eingeweide-, Muskel-, Gefäß- und Nervenlehre. Diese Tafel gehört zu den ursprünglichen Abbildungen und stammt von Oesterreicher s Hand. - Guter Abzug auf Velinpapier, dezent teilkoloriert. Blatt minimal stockfleckig und gebräunt, links leicht gewellt mit blassem Wasserfleck am Rand. In insgesamt guten Erhaltungszustand. -.
