ASHER DURAND (1796-1886). Asher Brown Durand was an American painter of the Hudson River School. He was called Americas first engraver by contemporary art historian William Dunlap. His engraving of the Declaration of Independence for John Trumbull established his reputation as being one of the best engravers in the country. He played an instrumental role in the development of American landscape painting, with his most famous works being Kindred Spirits and The First Harvest in the Wilderness.DS. 1pg. 5 x 4. Hubbard Is a STUDENT in the Antique School of the National Academy of the Arts of Design, and is entitled to all the PRIVILEGES of said Grade. A.B. Durand V. President Jno. G. Chapman Secry. This document is a certificate to E. B. Hubbard, who is enrolled in the antique school of the art academy. The antique school learned how to draw from plaster casts of classical sculptures and would eventually advance to life classes where they would draw from live models. Durand, a monumental figure in landscape paintings, helped establish this academy in 1825. He would become president of the academy later in 1845. Chapman is known for Baptism of Pocahontas located in the U.S. Capitol rotunda. This certificate sits below a reproduction of Durands painting Progress. This document is professionally framed and in fine condition.
