He shows how the Menzies Government manipulated the political climate so that key decisions re…garding Australia's involvement were made without prior Parliamentary or Press debate. Drawing on documents from the period, Sexton shows that Australia had volunteered the use of combat troops some time before the April 1965 annoucement; Australia had urged America to escalate the war by bombing North Vietnam; and Australia was totally indifferent to the views of the South Vietnamese government.
