The dust jacket is exceptionally well preserved, showing only minimal evidence of handling. An outstanding association copy inscribed by contributor William Roerick and from the personal library of Academy Award-nominated actress Dorothy McGuire. Inscribed by Roerick on the front free endpaper: "Dearest . for you love William" Beneath the inscription, Roerick directs the recipient to his contribution in the volume: "see page 61" On page 61, the opening page of his essay "Forster in America," Roerick has struck through his printed name and signed the page "Guillaume" (the French equivalent of William). Published in celebration of E.M. Forster's ninetieth birthday, this collection brings together essays and recollections by friends, colleagues, and literary associates. Roerick's contribution offers a firsthand reminiscence of Forster, with whom he maintained a close friendship over many years. Their association is further documented by Forster's dedication of his final essay collection, Two Cheers for Democracy, to Roerick and his Massachusetts home, The Lost Farm. Dorothy McGuire, a prominent stage and screen actress, was a contemporary of Roerick, with whom she appeared in the 1976 Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams' The Night of the Iguana. Signed.

Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Very Good +. First Edition. First Edition. Hardcover. Signed by Author. Signed by E.M. Forster. With provenance from journalist and playwright Jesse George Murray. First American edition, later printing of the 1927 issue. Octavo (5 1/2" x 7 1/2") 250 pp. Bound in the publisher's original black cl…oth with gilt lettering to the spine, which is rubbed but legible. A solid copy internally, clean and sound. Signed by E.M. Forster in black ink on the title page. With the ownership stamp of Jesse George Murray, Chicago newspaperman, playwright, and author. Murray was editor of the Weiner Kurier, an American-run newspaper in postwar Austria, and later press attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Vienna. Upon his return to the United States, he became a well-known columnist for the Chicago American, contributing the daily "George Murray's Chicago" column and working through the paper's evolution into Chicago Today. First delivered as a series of lectures at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1927, ASPECTS OF THE NOVEL is Forster's seminal meditation on the art of fiction-exploring elements such as plot, character, prophecy, and pattern with wit, clarity, and enduring insight. In the original black and green dust jacket (price-clipped), with only minimal wear, light aging, and a few minor tears-an attractive survival of a fragile jacket. An association copy of Forster's influential work on narrative form, enriched by a notable journalistic connection. Signed by Author.
