Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. First Softcover Edition. An insider's look at "assemblages, environments, & happenings" (the last a term coined by the author) which characterized the avant-garde art movement, expanding earlier, static forms of art off the canvas or pedestal into pieces that seemed to (& oftentimes actually did) move & shift & breathe. In 316 pages of brown paper text, complemented by two adjoining, unpaginated sections of black-and-white photos, including images of works by the 9 Japanese of the Gutai Group, Jean-Jacques Lebel, Wolf Vostell, George Brecht, Kenneth Dewey, & Milan Knizak. No date, c. late 1960s. An unusual book about an unusual art form, first written (but never published) in 1959 at the suggestion of the directors of the Reuben Gallery in New York City, where much of the art herein was centered. Kaprow revised the text as the art world (& his own mind) changed in the 1960s. From the library of a Stanford graduate, activist, & founding chair of the Theatre Dept at UC Davis (with his name in neat pen in front matter, no other markings). The First Softcover Edition, First Printing, from 1969, this nearly square (9.5" x 9.5") small quarto has brown decorative wrappers lettered in lighter brown & black. Condition is VG: completely clean inside, with moderate rubbing to extremities, chipping at corners & spine tips, & heavily faded spine. Pages white & unmarked, binding strong & straight. Our photos depict the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same day shipping on all orders received by 2pm weekdays (Pacific time); later orders, weekends, & holidays ship very next business day. SORRY: expedited domestic or international shipping require preapproval of extra postage (at least double) per USPS rates.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Large hardcover. Folio(12 x 12.25 in.). Burlap covered boards with stamped pink-beige lettering on front and spine. The burlap is in good shape but with a 1/4" split at top of the front spine ridge. Some fading on the spine and adjacent space on front. Binding is strong. The original clear vinyl jacket cover is present. It has "fogged" with age but is still flexible and in one piece. There is very light wear at the spine/top and some rippling on the front and spine. The binding is solid, very little play. Pages are excellent. This is a time capsule of the mid-sixties progressive art movement, showcasing a group of artists who went on to expand their profiles. A difficult book to describe except to say it is engaging and, occasionally, fascinating. The copyright page, title page, contents page and Kaprow essay are in the middle of the book, printed on tan pages. Pushing those boundaries, just like its subject. AT OVER 6 LB. THIS BOOK WILL REQUIRE EXTRA SHIPPING CHARGES.

IT WAS ALWAYS HAPPENING Take the book and place it on a flat surface and start turning the pages slowly, the grainy black and white images setting a course of action as disturbing as a dream unfixed from the dreamer. Was it really then or now, the book exclaims, in a mire of events built on when it was happening. In this moment, entering the book, nothing is clear but that art is timeless, boundless, fearless. Step. Right. In. Thanks to the publisher, Harry Abrams, we have an art document that preserves a truly ephemeral American movement that resisted form, defied space, and transformed the expectant eye of the audience. Kaprow's book design allows space for entering and contemplation before jarring you back to the moment. His text is clear and easy, should you accept the premise. Before you know it, connections come to light: Schwitters, Duchamp, Pollock, art brut, a sixties babel of motion in creation. Vertical surface creases to some sections not marring text or photographs in any way, spine barely sunned a shade, a tight and clean copy of a scarce book lacking the original clear jacket, in custom mylar cover. Solid square hardcover, 12.25 x 12.25 inches, bound in brown burlap, text pages on kraft paper.
Hardcover. Burlap-covered board w/ tan stamped printing. 343 pp., aprox. 250 pages of large illustrations. No original plastic jacket. Approximately 9lbs for shipping. Extensive photographs of works and performances. With a selection of scenarios by 9 Japanese of the Gutai Group Gutai Group [Sadamasa Motonaga, Akira Kanayama, Shuzo Mukai, Saburo Murakami, Shozo Shimamoto, Kazuo Shiraga, Atsuko Tanaka, Michio Yoshihara, Tsuruko Yamsaki, Jean-Jacques Lebel, Wolf Vostell, George Brecht, Kenneth Dewey, Milan Knízák, and Allan Kaprow. Good+ (back board has instances of wear to cloth. spine has light sunning w/ small stain to top. small indentation to lower board edge. coffee-like staining to lower edges of opening & closing pgs. tanning to pgs).

Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Near Fine. Book. Square quarto soft cover (300 x 300 mm) in printed gatefold flaps. 341 pp, with full page black and white illustrations and documentation of events throughout, designed and compiled by Kaprow. A comprehensive survey of Kaprow's own Happenings, interlaced with photographic documentation and contextual analyses of the work being done by his artistic contemporaries. Includes an 'introductory' text by Kaprow, found in the middle of the book next to the colophon, and printed on contrasting brown paper stock. The preface to the text reads: "Artists, like critics and historians, make the history they reflect, even with the best intentions to remain objective. I thought, when I began writing, that I should try both to observe and to influence as much as possible. But any book conceived in the middle of things rapidly evolving is bound to be topical and incomplete. This is its obvious limitation, as well as its special merit." The curious decision to place the introduction in the centre of the book reflects Kaprow's vision of art as a rapidly evolving process. The publication features the work of many Happenings and Fluxus artists alongside Kaprow: works and performances by Robert Whitman; Yayoi Kusama; Jim Dine; Jean Tinguely and Clarence Schmidt are all documented, as well as special sections on the work of: 9 Japanese of the Gutai Group; Jean-Jacques Lebel; Wolf Vostel; George Brecht; Kenneth Dewey and Milan Knízák. These case studies usefully contextualise the work of Kaprow, thereby suggesting his Happenings to be part of a burgeoning art movement. Condition: near fine.

Condition: Very good. Inscribed first edition of this founding document of performance and environmental art the first such work by a major publisher, Abrams. A founding document of performance and environmental art, and the first by a major publisher, Kaprow's ASSEMBLAGE, ENVIRONMENTS & HAPPENINGS was originally planned as an official Fluxus publication (see CODEX p. 288), but eventually evolved into this broader book. Artists covered include Robert Rauschenberg, Claes Oldenburg, Red Grooms, and George Segal, with contributions from Wolf Vostell, George Brecht, Kaprow and others. The recipient is almost certainly photojournalist Paul Berg, whose photos are included in this volume and fall roughly where Kaprow suggests they should (though there is no such plate 164). Berg photographed and covered Kaprow's happening "Push and Pull" for the ST. LOUIS POST DISPATCH in 1963. The uncommon hardcover issue of this important resource, it is scarce signed, especially with any kind of association. 12'' x 12''. Original brown burlap covered boards. Lacking original clear vinyl jacket. Black endpapers. 341, [3] pages. Inscribed by Kaprow to early preliminary: "For Paul on / his birthday - / A nostalgic / time in which / you played a / part (see pl. / 164 somewhere / deep inside!) / - in friendship / Allan K." Sunning to lower edges, spine faded. Else clean and sound throughout.
