Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Illustrated by Dudley, Robert (illustrator). First Edition. V, 117, [iv] pp. No date but publisher's ads at the back say Nov & Dec 1865. Chromo-lithographed title page and 24 tinted lithographed plates (by Robert Dudley) and one chart, all with tissue guards. Quarto. Original green cloth elaborately decorated with gilt images of the sea, cables, and the US/UK symbols, gilt and blind-stamping to spine, gilt edges. The spine has an old repair with some rubbing at the tips, at the same time endpapers renewed with lovely marbled paper. Covers have some rubbing and bumping at the corners. Some foxing to title page, and here and there throughout, first blank corner has a small lack, occasionally very small humidity mark at the top margin in a few of the plates, but otherwise sturdy and unmarked, a nice copy. This copy was owned by and handed down through the family of Thomas A. S. Clack who sailed on the Great Eastern and other telegraph laying ships from 1876-1900. The book documents the attempt at laying the Atlantic cable in 1865 (the first cable was laid a few years before but failed very shortly) , which presaged the successful laying of the trans-Atlantic telegraph cable in 1866, one of the greatest technological achievements of the age. Russell was a noted war correspondent and the only journalist allowed on the expeditions. Dudley's beautiful plates show the Great Eastern, the laying of the cable, the sites of the cable's endpoints, recovery of lost cables, etc. ; Lithograph; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 117 pages; Holding ebay : crafiecra (21YELLOW_STAR Star) Hello Sylvia: If you would prefer to leave it on eBay perhaps we could work on a first right of refusal basis. But, yes, I am interested in buying the book. I'm related to Cyrus West Field whose company laid the Atlantic cable. Craig Field crafiecra (21YELLOW_STAR Star).
