Condition: Good. Subscription receipt signed by the publisher Boudet and a 4 page manuscript index of the maps giving the dates of each. Throughout the second half of the eighteenth century this was the standard general atlas in France, challenged only by d'Anville's more specialised work and by later re-issues of Delisle's maps….The atlas was conceived in 1752 when the original prospectus came out, issued by subscription and immediately supported by the French court. There were some 600 subscribers to the copies on larger paper (of which this is one), headed by Madame de Pompadour, an ardent book collector.The prospectus, here loosely inserted, is entitled: "Atlas universel complet en centes cartes géographique dressée sur les relations & les observations les plus exactes & les plus récentes. Par M. Robert, & M. de Vaugondy, son fils, Geographes du Roi. Grand in-folio, proposé par souscription.
