Minuten später ist ein Kommando der Deutschen da. Weil Ploeg vor ihrer Tür liegt, werden die Steenwijks verhaftet, ihr Haus niedergebrannt. Anton sieht seine Eltern nie wieder. Er wird mit der tatsächlichen Attentäterin, die bei der folgenden Razzia zufällig verhaftet wurde, zusammengesperrt. Anton hat Glück und überlebt. Dreißig Jahre später kann er die Fakten jener Nacht genau rekonstruieren und trifft alle Beteiligten wieder: den Sohn des Polizisten Ploeg, der seinen Vater für ein Opfer der Kommunisten hält, er erfährt, dass die Freundin jener Nacht in der Zelle die Schuld am Tod seiner Eltern trug, weil sie genau wusste, dass die Deutschen sich für den Mord an den Unschuldigen rächen würden. Und er trifft auch Karin Korteweg, die damals half, Ploegs Leiche vor die Tür seiner Eltern zu legen und die erzählt, dass ihr Vater Selbstmord verübt hat, weil er seine Schuld am Tod d er Steenwijks nicht ertragen konnte. So geraten die einstmals klaren Fronten zwischen Freund und Feind, zwischen Besatzung und Widerstand durcheinander und als bestürzendes Fazit bleibt, dass nur diejenigen, die in der Nacht des Attentates die Rolläden herunterließen und nichts gehört und gesehen haben wollen am Ende als einzige eine weiße Weste behalten. Harry Mulisch, 1927 in Haarlem geboren, lebt heute in Amsterdam. In seinem umfangreichen Werk - Erzählungen, Romane, Theaterstücke, Gedichte, Essays, Studien, Reportagen, Libretti und Drehbücher - spielen der Zweite Weltkrieg und dessen Folge, der Kalte Krieg, eine wichtige Rolle.
