No Binding. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Single sheet folded to create a broadside with printing on five of the eight panels. Measures 5 5/8 x 5 inches (143 x 128 mm) when folded. SIGNED by Michael McClure, one of the authors featured in this broadside for Auerhahn publications. The broadside features excerpts of poetry by McClure, John Wieners, Philip Lamantia, and Philip Whalen. The idea was to promote Auerhahn's books and pamphlets. Although the broadside doesn't contain a publication date, we estimate 1959, based on the broadside's list of forthcoming publications. Dave Haselwood founded Auerhahn in 1958 and published works that increased the influence of the Beat movement. His publications "were known to those on the scene as thoughtfully designed, beautifully produced aesthetic objects showcasing some of the finest voices of the 'new poetry.'" (Steven Belletto, The Beats: A Literary History, page 252.)Michael McClure, who signed this broadside, was instrumental in launching the Beat movement. He died on May 4, 2020, at age 87. McClure took part in a legendary poetry reading at the Six Gallery in San Francisco in October 1955. Other readers were Allen Ginsberg (who read an early version of Howl), Philip Lamantia, Gary Snyder, and Philip Whalen, with Kenneth Rexroth acting as master of ceremonies. A beautiful broadside from Auerhahn Press signed by the late Michael McClure. Copies of the broadside are scarce to the market, signed copies even more so. CONDITION: Light crease running throughout, toning to extremities. Very Good or better. Signed by Author(s).

Folding Broadside. Condition: Fine. First Edition. Only printing. An undated folding broadside advertisement tipped into a folding cover, as issued. Announcing the publication of McClure's Hymns to St. Geryon, and listing Wieners's Hotel Wentley Poems, Lamantia's Ekstasis, Whalen's Memoirs of an Interglacial Age (the last "in preparation"); includes a poem "OH CHRIST GOD LOVE CRY" by McClure. There are two holographic price-corrections in an anonymous hand, which has also written, in ball-point pen, inside the cover "Next Book: Hellan Hellan Ed Marshall". Considering that the Marshall book was not published until 1964, this announcement might have been used for some period after its initial presumed printing date in 1959. Scarce. Q09683.

Somewhat less than 500 copies printed on a variety of presses (colophon), 26 of which have been "grangerized" with Auerhahn ephemera (not here); 8vo, pp. [2], 87, [3]; illustrations and facsimiles throughout; decorative blue silkscreen cloth over boards, printed paper label on spine; fine. From the library of Allan Kornblum, poet, fine press printer, and publisher who founded Coffee House Press. This copy inscribed in pencil by Johnston: "For Allan & Cinda Kornblum, yrs. Alastair Johnston. 'You'll wonder where the yellow went / when you brush your teeth with wet cement'." This is a reference, no doubt, to Kornblum's Toothpaste Press, a letterpress operation which he operated in West Branch, Iowa, and later in Saint Paul, Minnesota from 1970 to the early 1980s.
