Autograph draft signed twice, of a Dispatch addressed to Hon. E. M. Stanton, Secretary of War, headed upper right, "(Cipher"), acknowledging receipt of and answering a dispatch over Stanton's signature, and referring to a subsequent dispatch stating that the former should have been signed by Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles.

i page. 10-3/4 x 7-3/4 inches. This letter was in the possession of Louis A. Coolidge, author of The Life of Ulysses S. Grant," and reproduced in facsimile in that book. Two horizontal creases where folded; otherwise very fine. Grant was unperturbed by the error, since he did "not propose to correspond with the Navy Dept. about military matters except through you." He lined out his first signature and added a signed afterthought, saying that he would inform Mr Welles that "further operations against Wilmington" would be communicated through the Secretary of War.
