Two horizontal creases where folded; otherwise very fine. Grant was unperturbed by the error, since he did "not propose to correspond with the Navy Dept. about military matters except through you." He lined out his first signature and added a signed afterthought, saying that he would inform Mr Welles that "further operations against Wilmington" would be communicated through the Secretary of War.
