Text of note reads: "John Ross Captain of the Royal Navy and a Director of an expedition to the Arctic Region arrived at Hull on the 18th November 1833 [signed] John Ross".The renowned Scottish explorer undertook his second Arctic expedition in 1829; after hardships, including repeated experiences being locked in ice, and the loss of three crewmen, he returned to England, amid great fanfare, in October 1833. As such, this statement may indeed formally memorialize the expedition's immediate return to England. Upon arrival Ross was summoned by King William IV and given a knighthood.
