No Binding. Condition: Near Fine. ("Upton Sinclair") 1 page, 11" x 8 1/2", on personal printed letterhead of Corona, California, 21 October 1954. Essentially an invoice addressed to Lawrence Smith in Buenos Aires, indicating that Smith: ".owes to Upton Sinclair for author's rights of works translated up to August 31, 1954 the sum of 9,374.40 pesos." Stamped (and embossed) with a notary seal, additionally annotated and signed in blue ink by a Riverside County, California notary public. Folds and very slight edgewear; still, near fine overall. The Lawrence Smith Agency, founded in 1938 in Argentina, was a literary agency which specialized in the representation of plays and general fiction translated into the Spanish language. Sinclair (1878-1968), outspoken American author of over 80 books; known for his espousal of socialism; won the Pulitzer Prize for "Dragon's Teeth" (1943); his best known work is "The Jungle."
