Each 76 x 127 mm (3 x 5 inches), image colour-printed. Written in ink (3) and pencil (1). Four vintage Mabel Lucie Attwell colour postcards, all to his wife Helen and signed with a doodle of a bone and a paw print. - One postcard, written in pencil, reads, "Dearest Squirrell, Many, many happy returns of our wedding anniversary, darling. I do love you so much" (10 March 1948); another, handwritten in his familiar blue ink, reads, "My dashing one, I thought this little bag might be useful for last minute packing! and also hope you stay safe! Nothing nor no one can nor ever will mean or be to me what you are, dear Helen" (August 1955). An undated postcard in blue ink says, "Welcome home. At last, dear darling mine, welcome back to our dear 'kennel', never more to roam! I'm always happy with you, dear, but everything's nicer in England, isn't it?". A fourth card, still in blue ink, says how much he is looking forward to seeing Helen the following Sunday and mentions travel arrangements (4 January 1951). - Cushing was a prolific writer to his wife Violet Hélène Beck (1905-1971) whilst they were apart, often due to his touring with theatrical companies (the undated example from Wellington must date from his visit to New Zealand with the Old Vic in 1948), and often sent postcards by Mabel Lucie Attwell. The present collection features her familiar child characters engaged in various activities: mowing the lawn (captioned "Home is a great place to get back to"), writing a letter ("There are so many things I like about you I can't get them all in1"), pouring a cup of tea ("God bless our 'levenses"), and laughing ("wot wont we do when I gets you home"). Peter Cushing was famously devoted to his wife, and became increasingly reclusive following her death in 1971. - Some handling wear, one card with closed tear near to top right margin. - Peter Cushing Collection, Canterbury Auctions, 2023.
