Like Main Street, Babbitt not only became a best seller, but it generated controversy, became a US cultural phenomenon, and eventually contributed a new word to the language. (Although the word âbabbittâ has come to mean a âsmugly conventional person,â George F. Babbitt is a more complex individual â" and more troubled â" than the dictionary definition would suggest.) Babbitt is the story of a middle-aged real estate broker who faces a series of psychological crises that reveal to him the emptiness of his superficially successful and prosperous life (Fleming).

Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First edition. First edition, first printing with first state issue text "Purdy" on page 49. Signed by Sinclair Lewis on the front free endpaper. 401, [6] pp. Bound in publisher's blue cloth stamped and blocked in bright orange. Near Fine with small tear to crown, small bub…ble in cloth at front board; dog-earring to 275-280 pp. In a Very Good unclipped dust jacket with fading to spine with shallow chips at ends and lower front corner; overall toned with light creasing at top edge of rear flap; singular tape repair at verso. A nice copy of Lewis' satirical novel of middle-class conformity, set in the fictional midwestern town of Zenith. While the protagonist's boosterism and bandwagon-jumping are what the novel is famous for, his later Bohemianism (and its ultimate shallowness) is a prescient commentary on the conformity of mass nonconformity that foretold the shortcomings of 1960s counterculture. The book won Lewis the 1930 Nobel Prize in Literature; rare signed. Taylor VIII; Pastore 8.
