September 1932 in Toronto, Ontario, Kanada; 4. Oktober 1982 ebenda) war ein kanadischer Pianist, Komponist, Organist und Musikautor. Er ist vor allem für seine Bach-Aufnahmen bekannt. . Radio-Dokumentationen und Schriften: Weniger bekannt als seine Musikaufnahmen sind Goulds Radio-Dokumentationen für die CBC, die von vielen Kritikern gelobt wurden. Hervorzuheben ist unter ihnen die Solitude Trilogy, eine Serie von drei Hörspielen über das Leben nördlich des Polarkreises. Sie besteht aus dem ersten Teil The Idea of North, der vom Norden und seinen Bewohnern handelt, The Latecomers, einer Sendung über Neufundland, und The Quiet in the Land, einem Hörspiel über die Mennoniten in Manitoba. Alle Teile der Solitude Trilogy benutzen eine Technik, die Gould selbst kontrapunktisches Radio nannte. Hierbei sprechen mehrere Personen gleichzeitig, aber nicht willkürlich aneinander vorbei. Der Sinngehalt des Gesagten der einzelnen Personen ergänzt sich gegenseitig ähnlich wie die Stimmen einer Fuge. Goulds Co-Produzent bei diesen Dokumentationen, Lorne Tulk, erzählte einst, dass Gould diese Technik bei The Idea of North aus einer gewissen Notlage heraus entwickelt hatte. Die Sendung durfte nur 60 Minuten dauern, aber Gould besaß Material für weitere 14 Minuten, das er unbedingt verwenden wollte. Auf diese Weise kam ihm, der die Kompositionstechniken des Barock sehr schätzte, die Idee, Gesprochenes wie kontrapunktische Musik zu behandeln. Goulds Schriften sind gesammelt in zwei Bänden auch auf Deutsch erschienen.
