Dark blue cloth boards with gilt lettering on cover and spine. Moderate chipping, bumping, and rubbing to extremities; lettering is quite faded, especially…on spine; subtle toning to spine; very mild soiling. No dust jacket. Text block has a gilt top stain and a deckle fore-edge. Early signs of cracking in hinges and a few gutters, but binding remains tight. Interior has light toning, mostly to endpapers. Includes 62 black-and-white photos on plates and three maps with the text, all present as called for. Charles L. Bernheimer (1864-1944) was a Manhattan-based businessman who funded and led 15 expeditions in the American Southwest between 1915 and 1936. Many of the trips were on behalf of the American Museum of Natural History and included notable figures such as John Wetherill, Ezekiel Johnson, and Earl Morris. This book recounts the expeditions conducted from 1921 to 1924 when the group explored the rugged terrain of the Rainbow Plateau and surrounding area while making numerous important geographical and archaeological discoveries.
