AgostinoBarbarigo (c. 1420 - 20 September 1501) was Doge of Venice from 1486until his death. His brother was Marco Barbarigo; the two are thenamesakes of the Master of the Barbarigo Reliefs, who was responsiblefor the creation of their tomb. In 1496 he created an Italian coalitionto push back Charles VIII of France from Italy, which led to the Battleof Fornovo during the French retreat from Italy. During his reign Venicegained several strongholds in Romagna and annexed the island of Cyprus. His relationships with the Ottoman sultan Bayezid II were initiallyamicable, but they became increasingly strained starting from 1492eventually leading to open war in 1499. The Venetian merchants inIstanbul were arrested, while Bosnian troops invaded Dalmatia andreached Zara. The Venetian fleet was defeated at the Battle of Zonchioand the Republic lost its base in Lepanto. The latter was soon followedby Modone and Corone, which meant the loss of all the main intermediatestops for the Venetian ships sailing towards the Levante. After fouryears of war, a peace treaty was signed in 1503.VDM Verlag, Dudweiler Landstraße 99, 66123 Saarbrücken 72 pp. Englisch.
