Wolter Jan Gerrit Bentinck (1745-1781), rear-admiral of Holland and West-Friesland, In 1776 was commander of the warship Venus. With it, he drove two Moroccan privateers onto the cliffs and made the Strait of Gibraltar safe for merchant shipping. In 1781, he died in the Battle of Dogger Bank. The Battle of Dogger Bank was a naval battle on 5 August 1781 during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War, contemporaneously related to the American Revolutionary War, in the North Sea. It was a bloody encounter between a British squadron under Vice Admiral Sir Hyde Parker and a Dutch squadron under Vice Admiral Johan Zoutman, both of which were escorting convoys.
