Photography by the contemporary Mexican photographer Alicia Ahumada Salaiz (b. 1956), featuring 96 of her black-and-white photographs, showing the landscapes, cactuses, people and architecture of the Barranca de Metztitlan, a national biosphere reserve located in the state of Hidalgo, designated as such in 2000 by presidential decree. Includes a prologue by Ahumada, forewords by and Antonio Bolivar and the Director of the reserve, Alejandra Rodriguez Gomez, as well as essays on Metztitlan Canyon and its history, the Convent of the Three Kings, the local succulents and cactuses, the settlers of the canyon, and the flora and fauna of the biosphere. In a fair dust jacket, with a large piece missing from the top of the spine. SIGNED and warmly and lengthily INSCRIBED by Gardner on the half-title page to his good friend Leo Roripaugh: "To Leo, friend, neighbor, fishing and hunting companion-with all my heart, yours, Erle. 1959." Gardner was close with the Rorpiaugh family in Temecula, CA, who lived near his ranch there. Laid-in is a small leaflet, representing the funeral program for Gardner, who died in March 1970. A previous bookseller's description laid in here notes that the book came from Louis Roripaugh's estate; he had a brother named Leo. Though Gardner is best-known for his Perry Mason novels and short stories, he was also a gifted writer on the landscape of the southwest.

An old donor has inscribed the book in ink: "To Chuck and Harriet with cordial Christmas greetings. Christmas 1954," and then Gardner has written on the same page: "and best wishes from the author, Yours, Erle Stanley Gardner." A very attractive, fresh copy. First edition, presentation copy.
