Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Good condition. Wear to book corners and edges. Body text and binding are still very good.Place-based cultural knowledge - of ceremonies, songs, stories, language, kinship and ecology - binds Australian Indigenous societies together. Over the last 100 years or so, records of this knowledge in many different formats - audiocassettes, photographs, films, written texts, maps, and digital recordings - have been accumulating at an ever-increasing rate. Yet this extensive documentary heritage is dispersed. In many cases, the Indigenous people who participated in the creation of the records, or their descendants, have little idea of where to find the records or how to access them. Some records are held precariously in ad hoc collections, and their caretakers may be perplexed about how to ensure they are cared for. Archival Returns: Central Australia and Beyond explores the strategies and practices by which cultural heritage materials can be returned to their communities of origin, and the issues this process raises for communities and for museums, galleries, and other cultural institutions.

Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford [1672-1739] is unlikely to have read this book - by all accounts he was hardly even literate, but his 1712 bookplate proudly proclaims his recent knighthood and appointment as First Lord of the Admiralty. At the time of publication of this Barwick's biography he was no-doubt keeping his head down after an attempt to restore the Stuart family to the throne through the so-called 'Atterbury Conspiracy.' He had been appointed James Stuart's 'Lords Regent in England' and commander of the Jacobite forces. Despite this he was allowed to slink away from public view until his death in 1739. Barwick's life was first printed in Latin in 1721, John Barwick [1612-84], himself a Royalist divine very much in Strafford's camp and who served the cause during the Civil War, undertaking intellegence work on the King's behalf, earning him a royal chaplaincy after the Restoration. His brother Peter who superintended the biography was a physician who died in 1705, this his posthumous publication; in a footnote on page 20 he gives an account of the misfortunes of Sir Thomas's forbears in the Civil War, referring to the then Earl Of Strafford, owner of this copy, as 'a worthy son' hence, perhaps, his acquisition of a large paper copy.
