In computing, abasic block is code that has one entry point (i.e., no code within it isthe destination of a jump instruction), one exit point and no jumpinstructions contained within it (i.e., a sequence of instructions whichare all executed if the first one in the sequence is executed). Thestart of a basic block may be jumped to from more than one location. Theend of a basic block may be a jump instruction or the statement beforethe destination of a jump instruction. Basic blocks are usually thebasic unit to which compiler optimizations are applied. Basic blocksform the vertices or nodes in a control flow graph. The code may besource code, assembly code or some other sequence of instructions. Moreformally, a sequence of instructions forms a basic block if theinstruction in each position dominates, or always executes before, allthose in later positions, and no other instruction executes between twoinstructions in the sequence.
