No creasing to covers or spine, 1/4" tear to top front cover, otherwise very light edge wear, barely discernible, paper edges browned, no foxing. Binding is tight and solid, but it has to be somewhat fragile 60 years to date. No marking of any kind to text/interior. "Emerson is to American life what Shakespeare is to British and Goethe to German. He was our most completely expressed writer and philosopher." Emerson depicted front cover in coat and tie looking a little dopey, oil lamp off right shoulder. Marked "First Edition" on publisher's page.
