Art / Print / Poster First Edition
Framed. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. 54 by 32.5 cm is visible. With frame and matting, 64 by 42 cm. The poster is customized for the Capitol Vodvil Theatre, a Thursday through Saturday showing. Capitol was a fairly common name for a theater, and we could find no theater with Vodvil in its name, obviously a substitute for a full spelling of Vaudeville. Many movie theaters had formerly been Vaudeville palaces, and for a long time many theaters had both movies and live Vaudeville co-existing. We think, but can't prove, that this poster was used by the Capitol Theatre that was in the Broadway neighborhood of New York. The movie was a pre-Code early sound (with spoken dialogue) movie, with a plot line that would be replicated many times afterward, and most notably, the Cary Grant Irene Dunne screwball comedy later in the same decade, "My Favorite Wife". In "A Lady Surrenders", the wife leaves her husband, and he remarries thinking she is gone forever, only for her to return. For Conrad Veidt, it was just one of nine feature films he was in in 1930. For the prolific Basil Rathbone, just one of seven. The frame shows use, with scratches and the like. It is still very functional, although in our view, very disposable. The poster stands up well, although we have not examined it outside its frame.
