Prospectus, 8.5" x 5.5", Folded Sheet, With Sample Black and White Photograph, VG.Provenance: Herb Yellin (1935-2014) was the highly respected publisher and founder of Lord John Press, considered by many to be one of the most important small presses of the 20th century. His close personal relationships with many significant writers resulted in an impressive number of unique, collectible, signed limited edition books. Working with some of modern literature's biggest names?Stephen King, Ray Bradbury, John Updike, Eudora Welty, and Joyce Carol Oates among them?and entertaining his personal fascination with Hollywood, Yellin was able to create a new realm for Lord John Press combining the two fields; several books, including The Lord John Film Festival, were the result.

Published in 1998, this 142-page book dives into the rugged and often harsh realities of life on the Batavia goldfields in far north Queensland. Here is what makes it stand out: Historical Depth: It chronicles the lives of miners and settlers who braved the remote Cape York Peninsula in search of fortune during the gold rush era. Genealogical Insights: The book includes genealogical tables, maps, and facsimiles, offering a rich tapestry of personal and regional history. Visuals & Layout: Illustrated with portraits, plans, and historical documents, it brings the goldfield s story to life. Sequel Connection: It s followed by Trials and Triumphs in the Northern Territory and Northern Australia, which expands on the themes of resilience and exploration. If you re into Australian regional history, pioneering tales, or genealogy, this book is a gem. Book (2) The Gold Rushes. Book condition. Ex-library copy. Book boards are clean & unmarked front & back. Book block is clean. Spine intact. Text body clean & unmarked throughout the book. Author W.P. Morrell is a historical account published in 1940 (this edition 1968) that explores the global phenomenon of gold rushes, with a particular focus on their social, economic, and political impacts. Morrell, a respected historian, delves into the transformative effects these events had on frontier societies, migration patterns, and the development of mining communities. Here are a few highlights about the book: Scope: Covers major gold rushes across the world, including those in California, Australia, and South Africa. Themes: Examines the lure of wealth, the hardships faced by miners, and the broader consequences for indigenous populations and colonial expansion. Structure: Includes maps and references at the end of chapters, offering scholarly depth and context. Book (3) The Victorian Gold Fields 1852-3: An original Album. Book condition is near fine. Hard cover. Dust jacket near fine. Spine intact. Text body clean front and back. The Victorian Gold Fields 1852 3: An Original Album is a stunning visual chronicle by artist Samuel Thomas Gill, who captured the raw energy and chaos of the gold rush era in Victoria, Australia. Commissioned by the State Library of Victoria, this collection of watercolours brings to life the diggers, tent cities, and mining techniques of the time with vivid detail and ironic charm. The album was first published in 1982 and includes: 100 pages of full-colour illustrations. A deeply researched introduction by historian Michael Cannon. Scenes depicting licensing, fossicking, sly grog tents, and the multicultural mix of fortune seekers Gill himself didn t strike gold, but his artwork became a cultural treasure. He died destitute, yet his legacy endures through these masterful depictions of one of Australia s most transformative periods. Over-all the three titles are in great order. Remember extra charges for over-sea shipping due to the weight exceed 500grams. See photos for more information. For more information you can contact via e-mail or call mobile. Signed by Author(s).

4to. "28" (but: 24) pp. With a woodcut vignette on the title-page and 2 decorated woodcut initials. Disbound, loosely inserted in 20th-century plain brown paper wrappers. Rare second edition, under a different title, of an eyewitness report of the dramatic shipwreck of the Arnhem, a Dutch East Indiaman built in 1654 for the VOC. The report was written by Simon van den Kerkhoven, a religious comforter to the sick ("Siecken-trooster") on board and one of the shipwreck's survivors. - The "ziekentrooster" was a religious office within the Dutch Protestant church since the 16th century. Generally, the person fulfilling this duty was not an official member of the clergy, but when in service of the major trading companies VOC and WIC, they received a special status which permitted them to perform religious duties such as administering the sacraments. - The account of the shipwreck of the Arnhem was first published in Middelburg by Jacques Fierens in 1663 under the title, "Historisch verhael, der wonderlike ende seer zeldsame voor-vallen, den gene bejegent die met het retour-schip Aernhem, van Batavia na het vaderland verreist zyn den 23 decem. 1661". The present second edition claims on its title-page that the author is Johannes van Kerckhoven: this appears to be a mistake, for the first edition, the present preface and the signature at the end of the account in the present pamphlet all mention Simon van den Kerkhoven. Another difference between the two editions can be found in the preliminaries: the dedication to the directors of the Zeeland chamber of the VOC is replaced by a rhymed preface in Dutch, titled and signed "Aen den leser, door Simon van den Kerckhoven, van Middelburgh; secken-trooster". - On 23 December 1661, the Dutch East Indiaman Arnhem left Batavia in the Dutch East Indies (now Jakarta, Indonesia) and set sail for the Low Countries, together with six other ships under the command of the Dutch admiral Arnold de Vlamingh van Oudtshoorn (1618-62). In February 1662, on their way to the Cape of Good Hope, the fleet was scattered by a storm. Three ships disappeared without a trace, while the Arnhem ran aground on the Cargados Carajos shoals in the Indian Ocean. Most of the crew managed to leave the ship in a small boat carrying twelve and on a larger vessel carrying about 100; both headed for Mauritius. Many died on that journey, and once ashore the group was further diminished and scattered. The surviving crew were able to leave Mauritius in small groups by boarding ships calling at the victualling station on the island. Curiously, the surviving crew members of the Arnhem are now presumed to have been the last people to have seen live dodos. - One of the survivors, the Dutch sailor Andries Stokram, published the first report of this shipwreck in May 1663, in which the officers were blamed for the ship's sinking. They were also charged with having pushed men overboard from the lifeboat. Another survivor, the Dutch bookkeeper Johan van Hal, refuted these accusations in his report, also published in 1663. That same year, Van den Kerkhoven's report appeared in which he supported the charges of Stokram and held the officers responsible. - Wrappers damaged along the fold of the spine, internally occasionally slightly browned, otherwise in good condition. - Cat. Antique print, titled: 'A Bougis of Bokjes' - This plate shows Buginese people near Batavia, East Indies, Indonesia. The Buginese people are an ethnic group - the most numerous of the three major linguistic and ethnic groups of South Sulawesi, in the southwestern province of Sulawesi, third largest island of Indonesia. Drawn to accompany J. Nieuhof's account of his travel in the east indies. Johan Nieuhof (1618-1672) was a Dutch traveller who wrote about his journeys to Brazil, China, India and the East Indies. His notes and illustrations were published in Dutch by Jacob van Meurs in 1665 and this English edition was published in 'Churchill's Voyages and Travels' (3rd edition 1744). Source unknown, to be determined. Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Philip Baldaeus' after an anonymous artist. Author: Philip Baldaeus (1632-1672). Father Philippus Baldaeus, Baelde or Philip Balde (October 1632, Delft - 1672, Geervliet) was a Dutch minister. He went to Jaffna, Ceylon with an invading Dutch force during 17th Century. As the first European he documented the life, language and culture of Tamil people, living in the north of the island. It is a great historical record, similar to Mahawamsa, and it was immediately published in Dutch and German (with many beautiful plates). Some plates in this work signed G. Appelmans fe., being the engraver. Technic: Engraving / etching on hand laid paper. Condition: Very good, given age. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. Date: 1744 Overall size: 8.3 x 13.6 inch Image size: 6.7 x 11.2 inch We also offer thousands of antique prints covering fields of interest as diverse as architecture, natural history, religion, ethnology and many more. Antique prints have long been appreciated for both their aesthetic and investment value. They were the product of engraved, etched or lithographed plates. These plates were handmade out of wood or metal, which required an incredible level of skill, patience and craftsmanship. Whether you have a house with Victorian furniture or more contemporary decor an old engraving can enhance your living space.
