Cloth with Stamped Design. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First American Edition. America. A Sketch of the Political, Social, and Religious Character of the United States of North America, in Two Lectures, Delivered at Berlin, with a Report read before the German Church Diet (Diety?) of Frankfort-on-the Main, Sept., 1854. By D…r. Philip Schaff. Translated from the German. C. Scribner (Charles Scribner) New York 1855, 1855. 8vo, original embossed brown cloth, spine gilt lettered. 291, [8(ads)] pp. First Edition. Philip Schaff (1819-1893) was born poor, illegitimate, and soon legally orphaned in Chur, Switzerland, and rose to extraordinary international prestige as a theologian, biblical scholar, and church historian. He was invited to the United States in 1844 to teach at a seminary in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, and remained in that rural area until 1865, when he moved to New York. He made numerous lecture trips back to Europe, was involved in many religious associations and activities, and produced a remarkable number of significant books. DAB describes his writings as "marked by thoroughness of research, accuracy, candor, clearness of style, ironic spirit, and keen interest in the bearing of the past on contemporary problems"; and ANB states that the present book "reflected Schaff's growing belief that the fulfillment of the Reformation would be realized in America. The Mercersburg seminary that had first hired Schaff had grown into Marshall College. In 1853 that college merged--for financial reasons--with Lancaster's Franklin College and moved to Lancaster, "One of Dr. Schaff's most useful works." Sabin 77491.]. Original brown cloth with stamped design, corners slightly bumped, the front endpaper is missing before the half title, the half-title has some light green coloring on the lower portion, former owners personal lbrary label towards the top and it lists this book as #196 in his collection. H.C. Eicherly (former owner) lived at 15 S. 19th ST. in Harrisburg, Pa. He later opened up a general store in Grantville, Pa.There is also a small 1/2" or less brown spot to the lower page edges of the first 50 pages. Sounds worse than it is. Other than the above mentioned conditions this book is complete, clean, and tight. The covers and inside contents are in almost fine condition. None (illustrator).
