Nine additional pamphlets, overall, in very good condition with minor paper flaws or light soiling. The true first edition of Behaviorism by John B. Watson, the founder of Behaviorism. Watson advanced the field of psychology as a science and anticipated the work of B.F. Skinner by more than 50 years. Watson's lectures were given in 1924 and 1925 at The People's Institute in New York City, an adult and immigrant educational organization. The talks were first published by the Institute for its "Lectures-in-Print" series as 12 pamphlets: Lecture I. What is Behaviorism. Lecture II. How to Study Human Behavior. Lecture III & IV. The Human Body. Lecture V & VI. Are There Any Human Instincts. Lecture VII Emotions. VIII. Emotions. (not present here) Lecture IX. Our Manual Habits. Lecture X. Talking and Thinking Lecture XI. "In 1913 Watson announced his break with contemporary psychology in a series of popular lectures at Columbia University Behaviorism, he announced, was a non-introspective, 'purely objective experimental branch of natural science,' dedicated to the 'prediction and control of behavior.' By criticizing the impracticality and dualism of existing psychology, Watson won praise from functionalist psychologists, pragmatists such as Dewey, and New Realist philosophers such as Bertrand Russell By the mid-1920s Watson had also become established as a popular speaker and writer who cast himself in the role of psychological expert to the nationa position that he held for more than a decade." (ANB) Watson studied neurobiology at the University of Chicago. He chaired the psychology department at Johns Hopkins, teaching there from 1908 to 1920. In 1915, he was the American Psychological Association's president. In 1928, he wrote the pioneering work on child-rearing, Psychological Care of Infant and Child. Rare to commerce.
