Hutongs are the ancient Chinese communities built hundreds of years ago that now rest in the middle of the urban sprawl. Tight streets, communal bathrooms, and a poor water supply are balanced by an incredible sense of community and peaceful way of life. Once one enters these alleys, the sounds of the noisy city streets and stress of the western world is left behind. People seem to slow down, talk to one another, and relax with the elderly as the day slowly passes. Three to four families share a common inner courtyard filled with potted plants, small religious shrines, and stone benches. I slowly came to realize that it was not the hutongs themselves that were being destroyed, but a way of life. The 80 full color photographs in this book chronicle a four-year journey of exploration through some of the oldest neighborhoods of Beijing, China. With a photographic process of long exposures ranging from twenty-five minutes to four hours, the people are predominantly lost.
