Profusely illustrated with 105 black and white captioned photographic plates by the author. Photos are tipped in opposite descriptive text. Bibliography. Blue cloth with red letters on the front cover and yellow letters on the spine. Wear to extremities with corners just barely rubbed through, rubbing evident along the edges of the boards, bottom of spine abraded to about the size of a thumb, seven inch split along rear gutter, photos in find condition, else very good and better with no internal markings. Tempest Anderson [1846-1913] was an ophthalmic surgeon at York County Hospital in the United Kingdom. He was also an expert amateur photographer and vulcanologist. He was a member of the Royal Society Commission which was appointed to investigate the aftermath of the eruptions of Soufriere volcano, St Vincent and Mont Pelee, Martinique, West Indies which both erupted in May, 1902. Some of his photographs of these eruptions were subsequently published in his book, VOLCANIC STUDES. [Wikipedia] According to a vulcanologist friend of mine, Tempest Anderson was the first person to use the term pyroclastic flow. Grenville Cole [Grenville Arthur James, [1859-1924] was an English geologist, from 1890 the Professor of Geology and Mineralogy in the Royal College of Science for Ireland, and from 1905 the Director of the Geological Survey of Ireland. E. Lawrence (writing as 'T. E. Shaw'); and the latter including an obituary of Kermode from 'The Times' of February 1959. 8vo. 194pp. Brown boards lettered in gold at the spine. This copy inscribed by the author to his son on the front free endpaper: "For Richard, a top-class writer, from Henry Williamsonm 3/11/68" and with the recipient's handsome armorial bookplate to the front pastedown. Beneath this is a second bookplate stating: "From the Library of Writer Henry Williamson and His Family", which identifies it as one of a batch auctioned following the death of Richard Williamson in 2022). At the base of the preface Williamson has also inked the text "See Epilogue". The top- and fore edge fractionally spotted, and with a touch more spotting to the free endpapers and to one or two preliminary and concluding leaves. Very good indeed in very good non-price-clipped dust wrapper, very lightly faded at the spine panel. Richard Calvert Williamson was Henry Williamson's fifth child and fourth son. His first book, written with the encouragement of his father and started whilst he was serving with the R.A.F., was 'The Dawn is My Brother' (1959), which was runner-up for the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize. He published two further books 'Capreol: The Story of a Roebuck' (1973) and 'The Great Yew Forest' (1978), and from 1964 until shortly before his death wrote a weekly wildlife column for the 'Chichester Observer'.
