The late expert on shell shock explores the men and women who who faced the challenge of tending the sick, preventing the spread of typhus, burying the dead in ditches etc after the liberation of the concentration camp in April 1945. Army stretcher bearers and ambulance drivers, UK medical students and relief workers all assisted. The records and memories they left paint a traumatic experience for them (let alone for the inmates). Two months later 46,000 inmates had survived while 14000 had died (Ann Frank had succumbed in late March 1945). A success or a failure to plan adequately? Plates. Quoted postage for UK 2nd class.
