Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Illustrated by Bemelmans, Ludwig (illustrator). First Edition. Signed, without inscription by Bemelmans upon half-title page. "Here are four favorite Bemelmans books that have not been easily available recently. My War with the United States is his discovery of America in 1914. Small Beer is the risible saga of his adventures and discoveries on the long road from Tirol to New York. The Donkey Inside takes us on his own magic carpet to the little-hidden-away country of Ecuador. I Love You, I Love You, I Love You is a star-spangled pot-pourri that presents the author in his various roles of bon vivant, doting parent, luxurious vagabond, and somewhat gullible uplifter of down-and-outers. There are also several of his choicest articles and stories not published before in book form." - dust jacket. viii, 503 pages. Occasional black and white illustrations. Illustrated endpapers. Discrete gift greetings atop front free endpaper, otherwise clean and unmarked with respectful wear. Binding sound. Average wear to unclipped dust jacket now preserved in glossy new archival-grade protection. A quality signed compilation by this beloved author. Pomerance A46. ; Illustrations; 8vo; Signed by Author.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Illustrated by Ludwig Bemelmans (illustrator). Second Printing. Signed and inscribed by Ludwig Bemelmans upon half-title page. "In this book you will get a new insight into many of the lovely places of Italy - Venice, Rome, the Italian Riviera, Naples, Capri and Ischia. But more important, you will meet people, the old prince in the Borghese Gardens of Rome, the sunny girl who did the chores in Bemelmans' rented villa in Capri, and the professor in exile in Ischia, the wonderful island that for so long has languished in the shadow of glittering Capri. Bemelmans makes Italy itself more real, perhaps, than any book on Italy has ever done before." - dust jacket. ix, [1], 102 p. In addition to the endpapers and frontispiece, there are 30 black illustrations by the author. Aside from a drop of liquid visible on pages 98-102, very clean, tight and unmarked with light wear. Heavy wear to dust jacket now in glossy new archival-grade protection. A quality signed example by this beloved author and illustrator. Pomerance A22. ; Illustrations; 4to; Signed by Author.

LUDWIG BEMELMANS, (AMERICAN 1895-1962) OIL on Board FRAMED TO 28.5â X 24â (SIGHT)Â23.5â X 19â  Inscribed upper edge "The Old Port and the Arche De Noe", and inscribed lower left "Antibes".ÂSIGNED by Ludwig Bemelmans Lower Right. Oil and watercolor on paper mounted to board, signed at lower right and inscribed "Antibes" at lower left, inscribed "The Old Port and the Arche De Noe" along top margin, presented in the likely original frame. Â"TheÂArche de Noe", is Bemelmans personal boat which he harbored in the port of Antibes, France. This is a spectacular piece, both detailed, and vibrant and with an active, fantastic scene of a port in France. The painting is large for an original Bemelmans and quite detailed. There is the woman pushing a cart of newly catched fish off the docks, and fisherman taking a break- chatting and smoking pipes after a long day of fishing. A large impressionistic tree with blue leaves covers the background. Off to the left is a dog standing on his hind legs next to a large fountain, and off to the right is an awning with several men sitting under the canopy at a table while chatting. And in the middle of the painting is a large sail boat. An absolutely charming scene, immense with detail and vibrancy. The port scene of Antibes is where Bemelmans harbored his personal boat, "The Arche de Noe". FRAMED TO 28.5â X 24â PROVENANCE: Ex: The Estate of the late Eleanor Revson, New York, New York.ÂThe art was purchased from an Auction House who was commissioned to sell several original paintings by Ludwig Bemelmans from the Revson estate. A copy of the invoice and lot description will be included with the artwork, and will provide both provenance and authenticity. Original works of art by Bemelmans are extremely scarce with paintings/scenes from the characters of his books selling for over $75,000 BIOGRAPHY: Bemelmans, Ludwig: Beloved by three generations of young readers, Ludwig Bemelmans is best known for his Madeline books. What many may not know is that Bemelmans, born in the Austrian Tyrol, considered himself more an artist than an author. Bemelmans began writing in 1934 with the introduction of Hansi, his first of 15 childrenâs books. His diverse language base gave him a unique and quirky style of writing that children adored. His watercolor illustrations belied a simplistic style that partnered well with his sophisticated verse. Until his death in 1962, he wrote an average of one to two books per year. In addition to his juvenile fiction, his literary works included screenplays, adult novels, and stories. Bemelmans was a contributor to Harperâs Bazaar, Vogue, and the New Yorker, among others. His book Madelineâs Rescue was awarded the prestigious Caldecott Medal in 1953. As an artist, Ludwig Bemelmans designed a Broadway set, completed several Hollywood projects, illustrated for the cover of the New Yorker, and painted several murals. His art can be found at New Yorkâs Carlyle Hotel, the Museà National dâArt in Paris, France, and in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. His character Madeline, the spunky heroine of Bemelmansâ classic five book series, celebrates her 75th anniversary this year. ADDITIONAL IMAGES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. LUDWIG BEMELMANS, (AMERICAN 1898-1962) WATERCOLOR ON PAPER, 8.5â X 5.5â (Sight) FRAMED TO DIMENSIONS OF 17.5â X 14â SIGNED LOWER MIDDLE An adorable Original Watercolor painting on paper by Ludwig Bemelmans of the poodle from his story âFather Dear Fatherâ (see Bemelmans bio below). A vibrant classic piece in fine condition of âLittle Bitâ sitting upright on her haunches, with large bows in her ears. (In the book Little Bit is described as having shoebutton eyes, a patent leather nose, and a strawberry colored collar.) Ludwig Bemelmans always considered himself an artist first, and an author second. This piece is richly toned in inks with watercolor wash in the classic Bemelmans style. Has an important, wonderful presence on the wall, presented in a silver rubbed wood frame. The piece is matted in a deep beveled mat, framed and glazed using 100% archival materials. PROVENANCE: The artwork is a unique original piece from a tipped-in page from the scarce signed limited edition book, âFather, Dear Fatherâ, consisting of 151 signed copies. The limited edition was an early Bemelmanâs title in which he created a unique watercolor for each book. Each individual piece was rendered on a separate page and then later âtipped inâ to the book. The page was then gently removed from the book and framed (the process could easily be reversed if desired). The book is in near fine condition. The framed art will be accompanied by the book for provenance. Originally published in 1953, âFather, Dear Fatherâ is based on a trip Bemelmans took with his 13 year old daughter, Barbara and her digest-size poodle. This piece is SIGNED by Ludwig Bemelmans lower middle. Original works of art by Bemelmans are extremely scarce with paintings/scenes from the characters of his books selling for over $22,000 Condition: The art is in excellent condition BIOGRAPHY: Bemelmans, Ludwig: Beloved by three generations of young readers, Ludwig Bemelmans is best known for his Madeline books.
