Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Drawings by Ben Shahn (illustrator). 1st Edition. Stated First Edition. Once listed, this will be the Only copy signed by the artist/illustrator for sale anywhere on the Internet. His signature can be seen off the top edge of the blank front end paper (see photo). You can see the covers in the photos. They are clean with the exception of what looks like a small water stain just below the front top corner. The brown lettering on the front and the spine is nicely bright. There is a tiny loss of cloth at the bottom edge of the spine, a little crinkling at the top edge. The two corners of the rear cover have a tiny bump/crease. However neither had any impact on the pages. That book is also the case with the stain off the front top corner, no impact on the interior of the book. The cover edges are in solid shape, no rubbing. Same goes for the cover corners. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The interior of the book looks very good. There is a little tan rectangular shape off the top edge of the front inside cover and facing signed front end paper. You can see it in the second photo of the signed page. It does not recur anywhere else in the book. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through I found only one page with a speck-sized spot. I didn't find any creasing on any of the text pages. There are two blank rear end papers. The first one has a mild crease. All of the illustrations are in perfect condition. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And Mr. Shahn's signature is the only writing to be found anywhere. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It has one tear a little ways down from the front top edge. There are losses at both spine ends. The spine is toned to tan. There's also a little loss at the rear top corner, and tiny ones at the other corners. There is handling soiling off the front bottom edge, a little off the rear bottom edge as well. There is a little tab of tape off the top edge of the front flap. Not sure why, there's no tear there. The flaps are otherwise in very nice condition, very clean, no tears. The jacket is NOT price-clipped($3.00), not clipped at all. I've always had it in a fitted protective cover. Here is what AI has put together on the book: 'Ounce Dice Trice (1958) is a celebrated children's book written by Alastair Reid and illustrated with over 100 whimsical black-and-white drawings by artist Ben Shahn. The book acts as a playful, creative dictionary of unusual words. It is considered a unique collaboration, often noted for blending Shahn's serious art style with the lighthearted subject matter. Content: The book features word-play, rhymes, and nonsense words. It is categorized into sections, including 'words to say to oneself,' 'words for when it's raining,' and 'rude names for nitwits'. Illustrations: Ben Shahn provided over 100 distinct illustrations, which transformed the book into a recognized piece of art. Legacy: It is described as a 'treat for ages 6 to 100'. It was later reissued by the New York Review Children's Collection. Availability: First editions published by Little, Brown and Company are considered collectibles.' From the front flap: 'This is a book of words. Some are funny, some are serious and beautiful, some are rude and some are odd. Alastair Reid has collected sounds and made words grow from them. He has collected words into lists and combined them into ideas. From single words he has woven garlands of ideas and definitions-- all fresh and clever and often funny. Ben Shahn has translated the words into pictures-- more than 100 of them. He has designed the book to be as fresh to the eye as to the ear. Artist and author have combined their skills into a work highly creative and completely enjoyable, a treasure trove of sounds and images. This is a book for unlimited enjoyment by all ages.'.
