AJ5 - A first edition (same date) hardcover book SIGNED and inscribed by author to previous owner on the front free endpaper in fair condition that has worn cover, scattered foxing, stains, chipping, and scuffing, lightly loose hinge, some tears on the inside pages, moisture soiled, light tanning and shelf wear with no dust jacket. Red covered boards with black and gilt letteringand design. 8"x5.5", 390 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Signed by Author.

Housed in later drop-back cloth box (somewhat misleadingly stating 'signed', which the book is not). Priestley's only foray into horror, rare in the dust-jacket. Benighted was adapted into the classic James Whale film The Old Dark House (1932), and has more recently been adapted for the stage. Minor scatted spotting, bookplate to front pastedown, some browning to free endpapers; cloth very good; jacket chipped with some loss to spine ends, fore-corners and sections of the top edge, otherwise very good. Contents unblemished throughout. Covers are unmarked and have no bumping to corners or rubbing to gilt lettering. In original VG+ dust jacket with publisher's printed price of 7/6 net to spine. Signed by the author directly to ffep without dedication. The basis of the 1932 horror film, 'The Old Dark House', directed by James Whale and starring Boris Karloff and Charles Laughton.
