Con 35 belle tavole zincografiche fuori testo, da disegni dell'autore, e una carta geografica a colori a doppia pagina. Esemplare su carta greve in eccellenti condizioni di conservazione. Edizione originale di una importante opera sulla città e il territorio di Biserta, in Tunisia, descritta dal punto di vista geografico, naturalistico e storico. Ne è Autore l'Arciduca Ludwig Salvator, figlio del Granduca di Toscana Leopoldo II di Lorena e di Maria Antonietta di Sicilia. Nato nel 1847, si trasferì con la famiglia nel 1859 a Praga, all'indomani della cacciata degli Asburgo-Lorena da Firenze, ed iniziò una lunga serie di viaggi a scopo di studio, che lo portarono a stabilirsi nelle Isole Baleari dove assunse il "nom-de-plume" di "Ludwig Graf Neudorf" e stabilì la sua residenza nello yacht di 51 metri "Nixe". Iniziò a traversare il Mediterraneo con una corte di una ventina di collaboratori, compilando accurati resoconti delle sue esplorazioni, tanto che Jules Verne si ispirò a lui per il personaggio di "Mattia Sandorf". Assai curate e pregiate le sue pubblicazioni, stampate all'incirca in tirature di 500 copie non venali, quasi tutte edite a Praga. Morì nel 1915. > Palau, 288 / 444. Borroni, 4420 /1. 1600 gr.

Kart Erste Ausgabe dieser Beschreibung von Bizerta in Tunesien, wie alle Bücher des Erzherzog Ludwig Salvator selten. - Ludwig Salvator, Erzherzog von Österreich (1847 - 1915) war der Enkel Großherzog Ferdinands III. von Toskana. Er mußte 1859 mit seiner Familie die Toskana verlassen, erhielt eine juristische Ausbildung und widmete sich daneben seinen naturwissenschaftlichen und nautischen Interessen. Später nahm er seinen Wohnsitz auf Mallorca und unternahm mit der eigenen Yacht ausgedehnte Reisen im Mittelmeerraum, deren wissenschaftlichen Ertrag er in zahlreichen, teils selbstillustrierten Werken veröffentlichte. Ludwig Salvator führte umfangreiche Korrespondenzen, u. a. mit Theodore Roosevelt d. Ä. und Jules Verne, der ihm mit der Titelfigur seines Romans Mathias Sandorf ein literarisches Denkmal setzte. Von den kaiserlichen Verwandten ob seines unkonventionellen Stils belächelt, vererbte er seinen drei illegitimen Kindern und seinem Gutsverwalter auf Mallorca reiche Besitzungen in Österreich-Ungarn, Frankreich, Spanien und Ägypten. - Die Tafeln wurden nach eigenhändigen Zeichnungen des Erzherzogs Ludwig Salvator in Photozinkographie gedruckt. Die Karte zeigt Bizerta und seine Umgebung. - Vorsatz mit hs. Besitzvermerk. Buchblock angebrochen, vereinzelt kl. Randläsuren, gebräunt.
