Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. War a la Mode: Military Pictures by Meissonier, Detaille, de Neuville and Berne-Bellecour by Christopher Forbes and Margaret Kelly was published by Forbes Magazine, in cooperation with Trentypo, Inc., and White Brothers Printers, in, I believe,1975 Not an ex-library copy, this 9" X 10", 31-page, 37-year-old, softcover offering is in VG condition. Still, at age 37, in crisp, sound physical shape, there is some ever-so-slight yellowing of text's pages, and, for some reason, most of the front cover section of a magazine whose name I cannot make out--it is in full color, and reproduces de Neuville's "Commandant de Chasseurs a Pied"(1884)--is attached to the inside of the front cover section of this slender, rather unusual catalogue/offering. From Malcolm S. Forbes' Forward, "Some years ago when we were looking for some relatively inexpensive paintings to furnish the present Forbes Building, I was attracted to one of a French soldier, colorfully attired with an expression of tired boredom. It was by an artist named Berne-Bellecour, painted just after the Franco- Prussian War; the figure was replete with detail, the background pastorally peaceful. .Over time we added more Berne-Bellecours as well as works by other equally adept portrayers of that last Old Fashioned conflict--Meissonier, Detaille, and de Neuville. Here they are. Neither most critics nor the prices would qualify these canvases as Art in the capital 'A' sense. Yet together they portray better than history books and journals this brief, relatively bloodless, conflict. Though the last war of its sort, directly from it stemmed the wars that have killed untold millions of people in our time, and that tomorrow threaten to destroy this earth and all of us." The main portion of this slender volume features some 43 black and white reproductions of the four artists highlighted in this catalogue's title, be they paintings, lithographs, etchings, or drawings/sketches done, variously, in pencil, pen and ink, or black chalk. Also included are Contents Page, Introduction by Frank Anderson Trapp, entitled "The Military Tradition in French Art", and a Glossary of Continental Military Terms(from "Carabinier" to "Uhlan"). This is a most interesting offering, and if you have read this far, you may well be thinking the same thing! Thank you very much!!
