Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Printing. Signed "Chuck Berry" on title page in blue ink. Perhaps the most influential performer in the history of rock 'n' roll, guitarist Chuck Berry was born on October 19, 1926 in St. Louis, Mo. and developed a love of the blues and poetry as a child. By high school he was playing guitar, and quickly became a fixture on the local club scene, performing blues, rockabilly and pop. By the early '50s Berry had his own band and was one of the most popular African-American musicians around, though little-known outside of his community. In 1955 Berry made rock history with the single "Maybellene," a version of the hillbilly standard "Ida Red" recorded for the blues label Chess Records. The Top 20 tune crossed over to white audiences and pioneered the rhyming lyrics, steady beat and guitar solo which would characterize rock 'n' roll for years to come, influencing countless bands. Over the next few years Berry wrote numerous early rock standards such as "Roll Over Beethoven" and "Johnny B. Goode," becoming one of the most successful, popular musicians of any race among American youth. Berry made frequent television and film appearances, further breaking down color and music barriers. By the early '60s Berry's music had spread to Britain, where it inspired groups like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, who copied his style and covered many of his tunes. He became as big a star in the U.K. as he had been in the U.S., touring and recording all the while. Towards the end of the decade, as blues became more accepted among mainstream audiences, Berry shifted towards slower, bluesier material, remaining quite popular among fans old and young alike. During the 1970s he continued to record albums for Chess, appear on TV specials, and play the oldies circuit. By the 1980s Berry had slowed down, but he remained as popular as ever among new generations of rock musicians who owed their livelihood to his early innovations. In the past decade Berry has been awarded numerous honors, written a popular autobiography, and appeared in numerous documentaries. Signed by Author(s).

Dimensions: Print: w 11 in x h 14 in; image: w 10 in x h 12.5 in Condition: Excellent. Shelved at PS1101 (# II). About the artist: Over the last three decades, Jerry Aronson has established his reputation as a producer, director, instructor, and photographer. Jerry started taking still photos in 1960 when, at the age of 15, he photographed President Eisenhower and Governor George Romney in Detroit, Michigan. In high school, he was the top winner of the National Kodak Scholastic Magazine awards. Later he studied under Aaron Siskind and Wynn Bullock at the Institute of Design in Chicago, where he received an MFA. He began teaching photography at South Shore High School in Chicago in 1970 and by 1972 his students were also top winners of the same National Kodak Scholastic awards. He also began freelancing as a photographer for various concert promoters in Chicago. He subsequently moved to Colorado and established the Cherry Creek High School photo department, while continuing to freelance, now for Denver concert promoters. He also became the head photographer for the Rocky Mountain Musical Express. His still photographs cover a broad range of subjects in music and politics. In the period following, he concentrated on filmmaking. His many works include the 1978 Academy Award-nominated film The Divided Trail, which is now part of the collection at the Library of Congress. He then directed the documentary series America's Music: The Roots of Country, released in 1996 for TBS. More recently, Jerry produced the documentary Chasing Ice, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012 and won a national Emmy for Best Nature Programming in 2014. Jerry's documentary The Life and Times of Allen Ginsberg had its world premiere at Sundance in 1993. The feature-length documentary had a US theatrical run and has since been exhibited at over 100 international film festivals and has also had a world-wide television and DVD release. The Ginsberg film won the prestigious International Documentary Association Award of Excellence in 1994. Jerry then edited a one-hour version for the PBS series "American Masters" which aired in 1997. The project was revised again after Ginsberg's passing and the final cut was completed for the tribute DVD, which was released in 2007. Jerry has taught in Chicago at Columbia College and at the University of Illinois. In 1973, he was instrumental in creating the highly respected film production program as part of Film Studies at the University of Colorado. In 2006, he won the University of Colorado Award for Teaching, and he retired from the University in 2008. Second Story Books is pleased to present a collection of photographs taken by Jerry of leading figures in the entertainment industry between 1967 and 1996.
