First Edition
Yellow printed wrappers, 8vo, 25 cm, 38 pp, 24 plates (some folding), ills. From Herrmann: 'Sotheby's Portrait of an auction house" -The [sale] on 26 March included the Zeiss Collection, at that time the property of an English lady, which had been catalogued originally by the celebrated Dr. Bode of Berlin s Kaiser Friedrich Museum, and other well-known experts. August Zeiss was a German industrialist who had been an active supporter ot Bode s museum. His collection was very strong in early Renaissance bronzes. Three were attributed to Donatello himself; others to some of his followers. Then there was a number of German and Italian wood carvings of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; a good deal of Italian maiolica; some fine Meissen; various Limoges enamels; elaborately decorated sixteenth-century Italian furniture, and seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Turkish and other carpets. Included in the same sale was a bronze group of Virtue Overcoming Vice, only 10 1/4 inches high, by Benvenuto Cellini, which fetched the remarkable price of £1,550. Another property, that had come from Norfolk, consisted of two pieces of Elizabethan tapestry of a map of Gloucestershire and the surrounding counties The catalogue included twenty-four pages of plates printed by collotype. which showed with mouth-watering detail many of the items included." Neatly priced in ink and totalled. Manuscript title added on spine, wrappers duststained and spotted, slight wear to spine ends, otherwise Good.
