Condition: Very Good. . Hardcover. Harper & Row, NY, 1965; 1st edn. with dust cover slightly scuffed, book in mint condition; xxx+401pp with index and notes; Andrew Sinclair's urbane history of the gradual emancipation of the American woman shows how the contemporary female has arrived at her present state of perplexity. The dri…ve for woman's freedom never proceeded in an orderly, step-by-step fashion, because women were always changing their objectives. Amid general acceptance of inferior status, individuals and small militant groups sprang up to push specific changes. The first generations of Pilgrim women strove for their religious freedom. With increased leisure, women of conscience actively participated in reform movements, originally for the abolition of slavery, later for the political equality of the sexes. The women who fought for the right to enter the labor market and the professions left the fight for sexual equality to a later generation. Every reform brought antagonism, not only from men, but from women themselves, who wanted to remain "ladies"? feminists had more to fear from Man's chivalry than from his tyranny. But if woman's ultimate role remained unclear, at least the myths and rigid rules which dominated her life could be shattered. In steady succession feminists changed the traditional attitudes toward early marriage and divorce; thev fought against the notion that women were too emotional to be educated and established a system of women's schools and colleges which still flourishes; they brought about dress reform that sometimes led to bloomers and other fads but also did away with the corset as the symbol of woman's bodily bondage; they wrote and encouraged books which destroyed woman's ignorance and fear of her own physiology. But above all, under the leadership of such extraordinary personalities as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Stanton, they worked for woman's right to vote. Andrew Sinclair shows clearly the many complex and varied factors which changed the roles of American women: how the original Puritan ethic was transformed by the different waves of immigration; how sexual mores were influenced by the decline of the church and the migration to cities; how industrialism determined woman's place in the family; and how periods of emancipation, such as the 1920's, have been followed by years of conservative reaction. This book, while a feat of scholarship deriving from much new research, is a delight to read because of its abundance of brilliant character sketches and anecdotes. It confirms Mr. Sinclair's reputation as one of the best social historians writing today. 8½x6". . . . . Books ship from the US and Ireland.
