Sample spine is laid on the back cover and is in excellent condition--could possibly be used in rebacking an original. Unusual to be issued with all the plates. Boards are covered in red linen with gold lettering and illustrations. No printing on the spine. Boards are in good to very good condition with gently bent and slightly fraying board corners and moderate soiling. Spine is tight but has the beginning of some splitting. Page ends are gilt. Pages are largely clean with a couple of smudges. No rips or bends. No foxing. Illustrations are in full-color and are in excellent condition.

Top edges gilt.The binding is shaken and somewhat worn with chipping and wear to the top and bottom of the spine ends and at the corners. Name and date, Christmas, 1917 on the second free front endpaper. Lovely silhouette animal endpapers. While all the plates are present and in good condition, the hinges have been reglued and there is considerable wear along the spine ends and at the gutters where it hs been reglued as well. This copy is something of a wounded bird with the lovely Charles Robinson plates. Charles Robinson(18701937) was a prolific British bookillustrator. Born inIslingtonin October 1870, London,[1][2]he was the son of illustrator Thomas Robinson, and his brothersThomas Heath RobinsonandWilliam Heath Robinsonalso became illustrators.[3]He served an apprenticeship as aprinterand took art lessons in the evenings. He won a place at theRoyal Academyin 1892 but was unable to take it up due to lack of finances.The first full book he illustrated wasRobert Louis Stevenson'sA Child's Garden of Verses(1895) which includes over 100 pen and ink drawings. It was extremely popular, going through many reprints, and generated numerous commissions. He illustrated manyfairy talesand children's books throughout his career, includingEugene Field'sLullaby Land(1897),W. E.
