Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. This book was inscribed by Gary Giddins to Jazz writer, Ira Gitler and his wife Mary Jo. "For Ira and Mary Jo - with admiration and affection, Gary Giddins." --> This item is from the collection of Ira Gitler, influential jazz critic and historian. Mr. Git…ler's criticism appeared regularly in publications like "DownBeat" and "JazzTimes." He wrote two books about bebop. He wrote several books on jazz including multiple editions of "The Encyclopedia of Jazz." Along with Leonard Feather and Nat Hentoff, Ira Gitler was among the most prodigious writers of liner notes, annotating more than 700 albums. In 2017, he was named a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). In this much-anticipated follow-up to the universally acclaimed first volume, NBCC Winner and preeminent cultural critic, Gary Giddins, now focuses on Crosby's most memorable period, the WWII war years and the origin story of White Christmas. Set against the backdrop of a Europe on the brink of collapse, this groundbreaking work traces Crosby's skyrocketing career as he fully inhabits a new era of American entertainment and culture. While he would go on to reshape both popular music and cinema more comprehensively than any other artist, Crosby's legacy would be forever intertwined with his impact on the home front, a unifying voice for a nation at war. Written by Gary Giddins and published by Little Brown & Company in 2018. As new condition. Never read, one small bump on spine. Comes from a smoke-free and pet-free environment. Every item is packaged by hand and handled with care. Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First UK edition. From the publisher: "Bing Crosby (1903-1977) was enormously talented, but with an indolent and irresponsible bent. He was also intelligent and cunning, and created for himself an enchanting image and a legend that was so often repeated in author…ized biographies that it was accepted as fact. Now, in this compelling biography by Donald Shepherd and Robert F. Slatzer, the image is shattered and the legend stripped away - revealing the shocking truth about the man and the innocent people who suffered immeasurably for having touched him." This copy is near fine with a black cloth spine on black paper boards. There is slight bumping to the spine ends. No other marks or damage. The unclipped DJ has just very slight shelf wear. Personal bookplates of the notable English cricketer Tony M. Chance are affixed to both sides of the front free endpaper. A bookplate with Bing Crosby's signature is affixed to the front pastedown. A signed black and white photo of the actress Dorothy Lamour, Crosby's co-star in the famous "Road" movie series is affixed to the black page after the index. Crosby's personal bookplate, with an inscription by Crosby's 2nd wife Kathryn (Grant) Crosby is affixed the the reverse side and an inscribed photo of the comedian and actor Bob Hope, Crosby's other co-star in the "Road" series, is affixed to the rear pastedown. An exceptional volume for any Crosby aficianado. Tony Michael Chance (1934-2021) was a well-known figure in the world of cricket. Throughout his career, he was known for his contributions to the sport, particularly in the domestic cricket scene in England. QB. Signed.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A remarkable copy of this history of the UK's most famous variety theatre. Likely one of several purchased by the Palladium at the time of publication and rebound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe with several blank signing sheets at each end of the book. Presumably intended as keepsakes, gif…ts or presentation copies for staff and distinguished visitors. This particular copy has been presented to a former Stage Door Keeper upon his retirement in 1974 and at the first blank leaf is inscribed to him by name by two of his colleagues. The second of these reads, "Dear George - Here follows a few memories - long may you enjoy them!". Four of the following few leaves are either wholly or partially signed by a variety of international performers and personalities associated directly with the theatre. Principle amongst the latter is the autograph of impresario and Palladium managing director, VAL PARNELL. It was Parnell's television show, "Val Parnell's Sunday Night at the London Palladium" which launched the Beatles to national stardom following their appearance on the show. Amongst the British performers to have signed the book can be counted Palladium stalwarts PAT KIRKWOOD, GRACIE FIELDS, and EDDIE KNOX & CHARLES NAUGHTON from "The Crazy Gang". Actors and Comedians TERRY THOMAS, ALFRED MARKS, MICHAEL BENTINE (The Goon Show founding member) and JERRY DESMONDE are present while the world of music is represented by band leader and impresario JACK HYLTON and Welsh singer DONALD PEERS. Danish actor/singer CARL BRISSON features as does the performer known as "the father of modern ventriloquism", FRED RUSSELL - also the father of Val Parnell as it happens. From across the Atlantic, STAN LAUREL and OLIVER HARDY have added their signatures as have BOB HOPE and BING CROSBY. These last two are rarely seen together - to have all four autographs in the same book is next to miraculous. BETTY HUTTON has signed the book as has influential singer/songwriter, JOHNNIE RAY. From further afield, the internationally renowned mentalist double-act, THE PIDDINGTONS, have added their signatures to the book. To this day, Sydney and Lesley Piddington are considered to be one of the greatest two-person telepathy acts of all time and were an absolute sensation - particularly in the UK - in their day. The book itself has been signed by the author at the title page. Bound in 3/4 green morocco gilt with raised bands at the spine, top edge gilt, pp. 254, illustrated with black and white photographs. Sunned at the backstrip and split at the joints at both the lower and upper compartments. Minor stains to the marbling at both covers. Some scarring to the top-edge gilt. Corners rubbed a little with small loss of leather. The text-block has tanned with age and there are occasional spots in some margins. It is likely that the book has not been particularly well stored over the entirety of the intervening years, with some traces of damp-staining noticeable at the bottom edge - not affecting the text or autographs. Firmly bound still and in VG condition overall or very near it. As an item of Variety or West End Theatre memorabilia there can be few more pleasing and delightful items currently available. The inclusion of Laurel & Hardy's autographs - very rarely found in a published book - adds particular poignancy given that the signing must have taken place during their farewell tour of the UK's theatres in 1952. An exceptional collection and book. Signed by Author(s).

This extraordinary souvenir album incorporates not only the entire first 15 months of the weekly paper issued by the Naval hospital chronicling 1945 and 1946 events overseen by Rear Admiral Chambers, but also incorporates 188 photographs providing essential visual documentation. The National Naval Medical Center at the urging of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, former Secretary of the Navy, pressed for the construction of the facility which was dedicated and operating by the time the U.S. entered World War II, with Rear Admiral Bunker in command. Originally desinged to hold 1200 Beds, the Naval Medical School, the Naval Dental School, and the Naval Medical Research Institute, the facility quickly outgrew its' space, and additional temporary buildings were added to accommodate over 2400 American sailors and Marines by the end of World War II. The photos document the celebrity visits by Alan Ladd, Veronica Lake, Irene Dunne who had appeared in My Favorite Wife, the Awful Truth and Anna and the King of Siam, Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, and others. In addition, there are photos of Harold Russell, double-amputee that won the best supporting actor Academy Award for "The Best Years of Our Loves." Also included are photos of the WAVES Hospital Corps School participants, nurses, surgical facilities, hospital wards, patients, and much more. The facility pioneered comprehensive occupational therapy techniques, to rehabilitate injured Naval personnel and US Marines. The signing is undedicated?too.? Please see all my other antique autographs from this same collector at my store.
