Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book provides biographical details of the succession of men appointed to the position of Librarian at Trinity College, Cambridge, from its foundation by Sir Edward Stanhope in 1609. It is the only College Librarianship in either University forming an integral part of its foundatio…n. The author has delved into the archives of the College, and from information gleaned from a variety of sources, including correspondence, admission books, and other documents, created biographical sketches of each of these men. He thereby brings to light the varied lives of these scholars, including Thomas Rotherham, the University Orator who was appointed Librarian in 1474, Clagett who was also a Cambridge University Librarian, and Humphrey Newton, a close friend of Sir Isaac Newton. The work includes discussion of the 1638 dispute over the appointment of the Librarian when the Archbishop of Canterbury claimed the right of presentation. This book will be of special interest to anyone with a particular interest in Trinity College, or in the history of either Cambridge University or academia in general. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
