Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This incredible early book on the "Birds of Pennsylvania" presents a connundrum! I have been unable to ascertain who painted the pictures.reproduced in this book as 50 chromolithograph plates. I have found references to the plates "being in the style of Audubon" and in the book itself, mention of the descriptions of some of these birds by Wilson (Alexander Wilson, Audubon's competitor). The book is supposedly authored by the State Ornithologist, Mr. Benjamin H. Warren (who has signed and dated a "compliments" notation on front endpaper) but who does not claim to be the artist in question. If you know who the artist was, I would be grateful to be informed. This book also has the name- "Clarence M. Busch-State Binder" embossed along the top edge of the front cover. Condition: This book is in very good condition, despite (or perhaps because) the fact that it is ex-library (only one name on the card in the pocket at the rear). The hard covers have a shelf number and are bumped, particularly at the top of the spine where there is some fraying. There is some finish loss along the top edge too and some darkening to the spine. Inside, the book has the usual library markings, including a perforated name of the college library from which it was withdrawn. The interior pages and in particular, the 50 chromolithographed color plates are clean and bright, fantastic really! They are all in good order and without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact but the binding is cracked in pages near and feels a bit loose although the boards are still firmly attached. This book is a treasure and needs to join the collection of someone who will understand how special it is. Unknown (illustrator). Inscribed by Author(s).…
