Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. Some light foxing to the prelims and some edge wear to the jacket. The Blue Privilege to record the last kuia who were privileged to wear the tattoo on their chin. The painter Harry Sangl thought to capture the images because it appeared to be a dying art form. He aimed to produce a record not only of their appearance but also of their dignity and the authority they had achieved by taking on the moko.

A stunning collection of 34 full page colour portraits, each with a brief biography of the subject on the facing page. The end-papers feature detailed drawings of each intricate tattoo. First edition in unclipped dust jacket. 96 pages. 335 x 245 mm (13¼ x 9¾ inches). Dust jacket and book are both in a very good condition. The clear removable plastic protective cover had sadly been secured by sticky tape, over time some of the residue has transferred to the endpapers (this is shown in the photographs). The portrait artist Harry Sangl created these works of art after seeing a centenarian Maori woman with a moko (chin and lip tattoo). He undertook a three-and-a-half year journey around the North Island of New Zealand during the 1970 s, looking for the last remaining Kuia (Maori women) with such decorations.

Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: NF. Harry Sengl (illustrator). 1st. Portrait artist Harry Sengl came to NZ from Germany in 1969 and his interest in Maori tattooing was ignited when he encountered his "first kuia with a moko" in 1972. In subsequent years he travelled widely in NZ seeking out elderly kuia (old lady) with "moko" (tattoo) willing to sit for the portraits presented in this fine book. Although he met with some refusals, he was able to paint 34 of these elderly women, each with a genuine, traditional chin and lip tattoo, with 33 of the paintings included in the text block of "The Blue Privilege " and the other appearing as the frontispiece. Each colour image is full page with a brief biography of the subject on the facing page. (One of the subject kuia was believed to be more than 120 years old at the time of the painting.) In addition to these paintings the end-papers carry close-up, detail sketches of each tattoo, other sketches show implements used for tattooing, traditional carvings, ornaments and weapons. In two complementary chapters Merimeri Penfold and D R Simmons respectively reflect on the place of moko in Maori community and the techniques used in creating a moko. Harry Sengl's book and his paintings are treasured reminders of that last generation of "kuia with a moko." First edition of 1980, 96 pages, 34 full page colour potrtraits by Sengl plus drawings/sketches. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG+, card with gift inscriprion pasted on FFEP verso, small ball-pen "squiggle" top corner half title, former owner ink name top edge half-title verso, otherwise internally excellent. Colour art DJ featuring two of the kuia paintings is NF, plastic protected with tape binding upper/lower edges. This large, heavy book (1.1kg unpacked) would require additional postage, particularly for international delivery.
