Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Illustration & Art Direction by Helane Freeman (illustrator). 1st Edition. Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm vinyl LP record, Priority Records SL-9755, near-mint vinyl in original plastic inner sleeve, in a very-good-plus glossy cardboard jacket. Includes unused foldable cardboard "stand-up" insert. This group of animated ("claymation") advertising characters actually won an Emmy award and released four LPs in the years 1987-1988, including "Meet the Raisins!" on Atlantic. The characters were originally created for a 1986 Sun-Maid commercial on behalf of the California Raisin Advisory Board when writer Seth Werner despaired "We've tried everything but dancing raisins singing (Marvin Gaye's 1968 hit) 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine!'" So they tried it, to enormous success, including a 3-D comic book, a tidal wave of raisin-themed merchandise, even a short-lived Saturday morning cartoon television show. Unfortunately, the Raisin campaign eventually failed when production costs to the raisin growers reportedly exceeded the measurable increase in their earnings. In this entry, the raisins offer Marvin Gaye's "Dancing in the Street"; Smokey Robinson's "Tracks of My Tears" and "My Girl"; Holland/Dozier/Holland's "Stop! In the Name of Love," and , of course, "I Heard It Through the Grapevine (Remix)." David Woodford, Saxophone; Dave Marotta, bass guitar. You could not make this stuff up. Reduced from $14.

Three cuts ("I Don't Need Nobody," "I'm a Lonely Man," and "I've Got the Blues and the Blues Got Me") are credited to L. Price-H. Logan; "Sittin' Here and Rockin'" to Johnny Otis, "Please Send Me Someone to Love" to Percy Mayfield. There are seven other cuts. Arranged and produced by Sid Feller. Lloyd Price -- best known for "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" (1952) and "Stagger Lee" (1958) was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. This LP now reduced from $15.

Name of this album appears to jacket spine and jacket rear panel, but NOT to jacket front panel, probably because for this first pressing, Day-glo blue titling (by R. Crumb) appeared to removable front plastic shrink-wrap only. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Not a book but a 10-inch "Long Playing" (mono) vinyl LP, Capitol H-513 with purple labels, vinyl "very good" or better," which demonstrates that Capitol (and Miss Morse) were offering rock 'n roll records before anyone had even settled on a name for the genre. Here, Ella Mae (who was featured on Capitol's first-ever release, "Cow-cow Boogie") offers "Have Mercy Baby," "Rock Me All Night Long," Jesse Stone's "Money Honey," four others. Vinyl plays through nicely with an occasional click or pop. This is early rock 'n roll with no audible guitar -- main instrumental backing is by piano and acoustic bass with an occasional wailing sax. Miss Ella Mae can really belt them out, however -- even if it's hard to keep a straight face when a set of back-up singers that could have been working for Johnny Mann or Sing Along With Mitch contribute their occasional scripted "bop-shoo-wop." Grade the jacket, with some tape adhesions near the top edge, "very good" as well. This 10-inch album has been known to catalog at $400 -- we started at $26, now reduced to $10.50.

The author sets the record straight on the two periods (1917-1922 and 1940-1941) that Jelly Roll Morton spent on the West Coast. All of these discs should play well, they generally grade "very good" to "very-good-plus" (though the flip side of "Louie Louie" -- that being the eminently forgettable "Haunted Castle" -- shows visible scratches), but none of them are shiny new. Some of the labels -- the Gordy, particularly -- show considerable rub from having been stored without individual paper sleeves. Nonetheless, for a very reasonable price you get the ORIGINAL RELEASES of The Angels' "My Boyfriend's Back" (production credited to those venerable Australian sheep herders, Feldman-Goldstein-Gottehrer); The Kingsmen's timeless rendition of Richard Berry's "Louie Louie" (possibly the only rock 'n roll song with its own FBI file); Bob and Earl's "Harlem Shuffle" (later covered by the Rolling Stones on their "Dirty Work" album, 1986); a double hit from Mary Wells -- Holland-Dozier-Holland's "You Lost the Sweetest Boy" backed by "What's Easy for Two Is So Hard for One," credited to one William Robinson, whoever that may be; Martha & The Vandellas offering two more Holland-Dozier-Holland compositions, those being "Quicksand" backed by "Darling, I Hum Our Song"; Jan Bradley offering some Northern Soul on the Chess label with "Mama Didn't Lie / Lovers Like Me," and finally Jimmy McGriff on the Sue label with "One of Mine / Broadway," both tracks from his Sue LP 1013, said LP also titled "One of Mine." Group of seven ORIGINAL 45 rpm "singles" from the year 1963, priced together as one lot to consolidate shipping charge. This group of seven, 45 rpm singles now reduced from $32.
