Hardcover. Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Illustrated black and white paper-covered boards of two figures at a signpost, and red lettering on front cover and black lettering along spine. Boards are quite worn, especially along edges where they've been exposed. Rear gutter is cracked and front feels a bit loose, but muslin is intact. Binding is secure but a little fragile. Flyleaf signed by a previous owner. Black-and-white illustrated frontispiece of many figures titled "Conquest of New Mexico". Title page dated 1880. 202 pages. Interiors are clean and unmarked. Black-and-white illustrations that range in size are thoroughly scattered throughout. Horace Scudder is best known for his children's books and the editorship he held of The Atlantic Monthly. Hardcover. Condition: VG-. 1st Edition. Paper-covered boards with an illustrative design that is an exemplar of how Japanese design influenced book decoration. With it's sever diagonals in black and white interspersed with dream-like illustrations of snow-capped mountains and the moon, the design has, presciently, a Surrealistic or Avant-Garde feel to it. Indeed, a decorative binding - in 1881 - way ahead of its time. Covers soiled, and flaked at hinges, worn at edges all around, foxing to tissue guard and frontispiece, still solidly bound. 8vo, 202p + 6p ads, illustrated, pictorial endpapers too show Japansese influence. Christmas gift inscription 1897 ffe. A solid, unsophisticated copy.
