ABOUT THIS: When it comes to the production and distribution of mass culture, no country in modern times has come close to rivaling the success of America. From blue jeans in central Europe to Elvis Presley's face on a Republic of Chad postage stamp, the reach of American mass culture extends into every corner of the globe. Most believe this is a twentieth-century phenomenon, but here Robert W. Rydell and Rob Kroes prove that its roots are far deeper. Buffalo Bill in Bologna reveals that the process of globalizing American mass culture began as early as the mid-nineteenth century. In fact, by the end of World War I, the United States already boasted an advanced network of culture industries that served to promote American values. Rydell and Kroes narrate how the circuses, amusement parks, vaudeville, mail-order catalogs, dime novels, and movies developed after the Civil Wartools central to hastening the reconstruction of the countryactually doubled as agents of American cultural diplomacy abroad. As symbols of America's version of the "good life," cultural products became a primary means for people around the world, especially in Europe, to reimagine both America and themselves in the context of America's growing global sphere of influence. Paying special attention to the role of the world's fairs, the exporting of Buffalo Bill's Wild West show to Europe, the release of The Birth of a Nation, and Woodrow Wilson's creation of the Committee on Public Information, Rydell and Kroes offer an absorbing tour through America's cultural expansion at the turn of the century. In BOLOGNA MIA, she has gathered together over ninety of her family's treasured recipes, each one evoking vivid memories of the kitchens she spent time in during her childhood. Each of these recipes comes with a story. Paganini shares with us her paternal grandmother's famed pasta recipes (Paganini believes it was her magical tortelloni that helped her to charm her husband), the wisdom of her maternal grandmother's delicate hands, and the recipes for her mother's Cordon Bleu award-winning specialty pastries, tortes and appetizers. The Bolognese are known for having a knack for taking simple ingredients and combining them to create uniquely flavorful dishes. In BOLOGNA MIA, Paganini captures the exciting flavor of the Bolognese culture, the incredible flavor of its dishes, as well as the passion her family feels for food.". SIGNED by the AUTHOR. Add to basket21 x 15cm. Paperback exhibition catalogue, [6pp]. Text in Italian. Contains the essay 'Uno sguardo sempre nuovo sul mondo' by Pierre Restany, accompanied by black and white photographs of Arman's sculptural works: fusions of hammers and pistols ("accumulations"), and a cut-up tea set. Born in Nice in 1928, Armand Pierre Fernandez (1928-) signed his early work with his first name only, but after a printer's error in 1958 he decided to retain 'Arman' for the rest of his career. After studies at the Ecole Nationale des Arts Decoratifs in Nice, Arman moved to Paris to study art history at the Ecole du Louvre. His work in these early years focused on abstract paintings inspired by the work of Nicolas de Stael. Arman's output ranges from drawings and prints to monumental public sculpture to his famous "accumulations" of found objects. His work is strongly influenced by Dada, and in turn Pop Art. Very good condition.
