Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A Book of Ballads: Being the Collected Light Verse of A. P. Herbert A. P. Herbert. London: Ernest Benn Limited, 1931. First edition. An appealing presentation and association copy, inscribed by A. P. Herbert on the title page to Edward and Fanny Wadsworth, apparently the British modernist and Vorticist artist Edward Wadsworth (1889-1949) and his wife Fanny Mary Wadsworth (née Eveleigh), a professional violinist. The inscription is signed affectionately "With love from Alan Herbert" and the volume is additionally dated December 1933 in manuscript. Of particular provenance interest, the front pastedown bears a large decorative "Ex Libris Barbara Wadsworth" bookplate. Barbara Wadsworth (1914-2008) was the daughter of Edward and Fanny Wadsworth and later wrote Edward Wadsworth: A Painter's Life (1989). The combination of the presentation inscription to Edward and Fanny and the Barbara Wadsworth bookplate provides a strong association with the Wadsworth family. Edward Wadsworth was an important figure in early twentieth-century British art, associated with Vorticism, the First World War dazzle-ship camouflage programme, and later Unit One. The association therefore gives this copy interest beyond Herbert collecting, particularly for collectors of British Modernism, Vorticism and twentieth-century art provenance. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering and decoration to spine. No dust jacket. Binding shows age-related wear, particularly rubbing and fraying at the spine ends and corners. Page edges toned/dust-marked, with some unevenness and signs of use consistent with age. Internally generally clean. Please refer closely to photographs for condition. A particularly interesting 1931 first edition with author presentation inscription and Wadsworth family provenance. Shipping Notice: Please note that international shipping costs are estimated. Additional charges may apply for this item due to size or weight. We will confirm any extra postage costs with the buyer before processing the order. Inscribed by Author(s).…
