Bierstadt to the fact that his submitted work "The Fifth Commandment" falls outside of the field of the publication. The text includes essays on Joseph Conrad, Theodore Dreiser, James Huneker, followed by a work titled "Puritanism As A Literary Force" in which Mencken alleges that William Dean Howells, Henry James, and Mark Twain were victims of the Puritan spirit.
