Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. size 260mmX190mm. Since the early 1950s historians have been showing an increased interest in Australia's national origins, and especially the reasons behind the decision of the British government in 1786 to use convicts to help establish a settlement at Botany Bay. This book takes the discussion in a new direction by dealing with the subject within the whole context of the changing structure of British mercantile, colonial and foreign policies during and after the American War of Independence. The overall situation within which the final decision was made to establish the settlement, as well as the question of why the First Fleet was sent when it was and not before, and why convicts were used. **The book has tanning and light shelf rubbing. The jacket has a few tape-repairs tears and a missing piece at the front (see photo) and several missing pieces from around the edges.**. Signed by Author(s).…
