H, 2nd NY Heavy artillery, as the drummer boy. His company captain, C.L.Smith writes in a letter the author quotes: "I recall you as but a child going with me to a real war where you were to spend years of your young life with your little drum. But my dear boy, it did good service, real genuine war service. I remember you were the first drummer boy the 2d New York had, and I am proud to know that my own little drummer boy marched at the head of the regiment in every campaign down to Appomattox and beat the last tattoo for the regiment at Hart's Island, New York Harbor, after nearly four years of service." REFERENCES: DORN NY 14; NEVINS I pg 132: "Miller was only twelve when war began, and teenage exuberance colored his later remembrances of service in Virginia.".

Condition: FINE. First printing, a trade paperback. A book which "brings together the correspondence between Walt Whitman and the numerous soldiers he met and attended as a volunteer male nurse during the Civil War. He details the environment of the encampments and the hospitals, the many situations in wartime which encouraged homosexual friendships among the soldiers, and the particular attraction that Whitman felt of the soldiers and patients he met. . . Shively includes representative letters from fifty soldiers and lovers, and they form a dramatic portrait of Whitman as caregiver, as confidant, and as lover. . . but Shively weakens his book by taking a side journey conjecturing the sexual orientation of both John Wilkes Booth and Abraham Lincoln." (GLBTRT) Illustrated with photographs. Includes a short selection of poems by Whitman, bibliography. 256 pp. Fine in glossy illustrated wrappers.
